Let's talk about something nobody wants to bring up. Those lashes you've been wearing for a week? They're covered in more than just mascara. Dead skin cells. Face oil. Bacteria. Old glue. Probably a little bit of yesterday's eyeliner.

I know, I know. You're busy. And cleaning them feels like a chore. But here's the thing—dirty lashes don't just look worse (clumpy and stiff), they're also the reason your eyes get itchy and red. You're holding bacteria against your eyelid for 8 hours a day.

And there's another problem: dirty lashes don't last. The buildup weighs them down, bends the band, and makes them fall apart way faster. You're throwing away money every time you skip a cleaning.

WHAT YOU NEED (AND WHAT YOU DON'T)

Good news: you don't need fancy lash cleaner. You probably have everything in your bathroom already.

Micellar water—the gentle, oil-free kind
A small bowl or clean jar lid
Cotton pads or a soft toothbrush (baby toothbrush is perfect)
A towel or paper towel

What you should NOT use: oil-based makeup remover, soap, shampoo, or anything with alcohol. Oil destroys the lash fibers and breaks down the glue residue. Alcohol makes the band brittle.

THE 3-MINUTE CLEANING ROUTINE

Do this every 2-3 wears, and your lashes will look brand new for months.

Peel off the old glue. Gently pull the dried glue off the band with your fingers. Don't scrape it with scissors—you'll cut the band. If the glue is stubborn, soak the band in micellar water for 30 seconds first.
Soak in micellar water. Fill your small bowl with micellar water and let the lashes float in it for 2 minutes. This loosens all the makeup, oil, and dirt.
Gently brush. Take the lashes out and place them on a towel. Using your soft toothbrush, brush from the band outward in one direction. You'll see the dirty water come off. For stubborn spots, dip the brush back in the micellar water.
Rinse and dry. Rinse the lashes under lukewarm water (not hot!). Shake off excess water and lay them flat on a dry towel. Let them air dry completely—about 30 minutes. Never use a hairdryer, it will warp the band.

That's it. Three minutes, twice a week.

HOW TO STORE THEM SO THEY LAST LONGER

Cleaning is half the battle. Storage is the other half. Here's what I see people doing wrong all the time:

Leaving them in a crumpled pile in your makeup bag—this bends the band permanently
Storing them in the original plastic case—this isn't bad, but only if the lash is fully dry first
Hanging them on a hook or clothespin—this stretches the band over time

The best method: lay them flat in their original case or a clean, dry container. Make sure they're 100% dry before you close the lid. If you trap moisture, you'll get mold. Yes, mold. I've seen it.

WHEN TO JUST THROW THEM AWAY

No amount of cleaning can save a lash that's reached the end of its life. Here's how to know when to say goodbye:

The band is bent or warped, even after you flex it
Hairs are falling out or looking permanently matted
They have a smell that doesn't wash off
The lash looks discolored or yellowed

With proper care, a good pair of lashes gives you 15-25 wears. If you're stretching them past that, you're not being frugal—you're being unhygienic.
