STEP-BY-STEP: THE PREP THAT PREVENTS ASYMMETRY

Before you even touch your lashes, you need to set yourself up for symmetry. Here's the exact process I recommend:

1. Look straight ahead in a mirror. Not down, not up. Straight ahead. This is the position your eyes will be in when people see you.
2. Mark your lash line. Use a thin eyeliner pencil to make a small dot at the center of your lash line on both eyes. This is your anchor point.
3. Trim your lashes from the outer edge. Never trim from the inner corner. Hold the lash up to your eye and trim only the outer end if it extends past your natural lash line.
4. Bend the band into a 'U' shape. Do this for 10 seconds. This makes the band flexible and easier to place against your eye's curve.

These four steps take 60 seconds. They prevent 90% of symmetry problems.

THE APPLICATION TECHNIQUE: ANCHOR, PRESS, ADJUST

Now, the actual application. Most women try to place the lash perfectly on the first try. That's wrong. The key is to anchor first, then adjust.

Step 1: Anchor the center. Apply your glue and wait 30 seconds for it to become tacky. Then place the lash directly on your center dot, not at the inner corner. Press it down firmly for 10 seconds.

Step 2: Press the outer corner. Gently ease the outer edge down onto your lash line. Don't force it. Let the band follow your eye's natural curve.

Step 3: Adjust the inner corner last. This is the trick. The inner corner is where asymmetry shows most. So you leave it for last. If one side looks slightly off, this is where you fix it.

Once both lashes are on, look straight ahead. If one lash looks higher, use your finger to press it down. If one looks too close to your nose, nudge it outward. Small adjustments after placement are much easier than removing and redoing.

THE 5-MINUTE SYMMETRY CHECK

After you've applied both lashes, do this quick check before you finish your makeup:

• Look straight ahead. Do both lashes touch your eyebrow when you raise your brows? If one does and one doesn't, adjust.
• Check the gap between your lash band and your natural lash line. It should be the same on both eyes.
• Look at your eyes from a 45-degree angle. The lash should follow the same curve as your eye.
• Blink a few times. If one lash pokes you or feels loose, it's not placed well.

Rhinoplasty surgeons know this. Portrait painters know this. The best makeup artists know this. They don't try to make both eyes identical. They try to make them look GOOD TOGETHER.

So if you're obsessing over getting your lashes to be pixel-perfect mirrors of each other, stop. It's an impossible goal. Instead, aim for balance. If one eye is naturally more hooded, your lash on that side might need to be placed slightly higher to make it visible. That's not a mistake — that's skill.

COMMON SYMMETRY PROBLEMS AND FIXES

One lash keeps lifting at the inner corner.

This means your band is too stiff or your inner corner is rounder than the band. Add a tiny drop of glue to the inner corner after placement and press down for 20 seconds.

My lashes look crooked when I look down.

That's because you're placing them at an angle when you look down. Apply with your eyes open, looking straight ahead. Only close your eyes when the glue is set.

One lash sits further from my natural lash line.

Use a cotton swab to push the lash closer to your lash line while the glue is still slightly wet. If it's already dry, you'll need to remove and reapply.
