How to Trim False Lashes to Fit Your Eye Shape

The first time I tried to trim false lashes, I ruined a $28 pair in about 90 seconds. I chopped the outer corners straight across, made a gap on my inner corner, and then wore them to a wedding — where they poked me for six hours. If you have ever put on a pair of false lashes and felt them poke the corners of your eyes, or watched them slide because the band did not match your lash line, the fix is simpler than you think. You do not need shorter lashes, and you do not need a professional. You need to trim them correctly.

THE EXACT METHOD TO TRIM FALSE LASHES FOR YOUR EYE SHAPE

Here is the method I use every time, and it has not failed since that wedding disaster:

1. Place the lash on top of your eye first — never trim before fitting. Hold the inner corner of the lash against the inner corner of your eye. Look straight ahead and see how much the lash extends past your outer lash line. It should overhang by only 2–3mm.
2. Trim from the outer corner, never the inner corner. The inner part of the lash is your alignment guide. Cutting it makes it impossible to center the lash correctly.
3. Cut at an upward diagonal, not straight across. A straight cut makes the outer tip look blunt and stiff. A diagonal snip keeps the tapered wispy look intact.
4. Test again and cut less next time. It is always easier to cut off another 1mm than to glue back a chopped-off lash.

For your specific eye shape, use these measurements as a starting point:

• Almond eyes: trim 2–3mm from the outer corner only. Almond eyes handle most lash lengths well.
• Round eyes: trim 3–4mm and shorten the center spikes slightly to avoid making your eyes look even rounder. Long outer corners help elongate the shape.
• Hooded eyes: trim the outer corner by 2mm and avoid heavy outer flares — they will get lost in the hood and create a droopy look.
• Monolid eyes: trim 4–5mm total and choose a lash with a strong curl (D or CC). The shorter length keeps the band from lifting away from your natural lash line.

COMMON TRIMMING MISTAKES (AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD)

• Cutting from the inner corner. The inner corner is the only fixed reference point you have. Always trim from the outer edge.
• Cutting straight across. This destroys the spikes. Snip upward in a diagonal to preserve the natural taper.
• Cutting after applying glue. Wet bands stretch and deform. Cut first, then apply adhesive.
• Trimming too much at once. Remove 1–2mm per test. On an almond eye, trimming 4mm+ leads to that weird "too short" look where the outer lash does not reach your natural outer corner.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LASH BEFORE YOU TRIM IT

The best trimming job in the world cannot fix a poorly made lash. Before you buy, check for:

• A visible inner-to-outer gradient. Good lashes are already shorter at the inner corner. If both ends are the same length, it is not a well-designed lash.
• A flexible, thin band. A 0.03mm band bends with your lash line. Thick bands are hard to trim cleanly and prone to sliding.
• Fiber that does not fray. Run your scissors through a corner. If the fibers split or shed, the quality is poor.
• Reusability of 10+ wears. This gives you room to practice trimming without stressing about ruining an expensive pair.

Once you find a lash that checks those boxes, you will notice that you barely need to trim at all — a small outer-corner snip is usually enough.
