It's not just you. Humidity, salt water, and sunscreen oil can undo a lash look faster than a row of ocean waves. But there's a simple sequence that keeps lashes looking sharp even when your hair is dripping.

Let me set the scene: last June, I showed up to a beach picnic with a fresh pair of wispy lashes. I used a well-known lash glue, applied carefully, and checked my reflection before leaving the house. I felt untouchable.

Two hours later, I looked like I had cried off all my makeup. My lash bands were lifting at both corners. The glue had turned white as soon as it hit the salt air. I spent the rest of the afternoon pressing them down and wondering if anyone noticed.

• Salt water. Salt doesn't just rinse away; it leaves a crystallized residue that makes lash fibers look stiff and brittle. When it dries, it can tug at the band.
• Sunscreen oils. Chemical sunscreens contain oils that break down ingredients in lash adhesives. Even a tiny bit transferred from your face can dissolve the glue bond in about 15 to 20 minutes.

THE 4-STEP BEACH LASH ROUTINE THAT HOLDS

1. Start with a clean, dry lash line. Remove all traces of face oil or eye cream. Wait 10 minutes after applying skincare before you attempt lash placement. This gives the oils time to evaporate.
2. Choose a lightweight lash with a clear or transparent band. Thick cotton bands absorb moisture and become heavy. A thin polymer band sticks better and doesn't droop.
3. Apply lash glue to the lash, not your eye. Let it dry for 30-45 seconds until it feels tacky to the touch. This small window of tackiness is what keeps them on in windy conditions.
4. Set with a waterproof sealant around the edges. Use a clean spoolie to apply a thin layer of clear lash sealant along the band after the glue dries. It's like a raincoat for your lash adhesive. Avoid anything with oil in it.
