You do not need an eye doctor or a makeup artist to find the answer. You can determine your eye shape in about three minutes, in front of any mirror, using the exact method below.

THE 3-MINUTE MIRROR TEST

Stand about an arm's length from a well-lit mirror and look straight ahead. Do not squint, tilt your head, or pull your skin — we want your eyes at rest, the way they naturally sit. Now work through these four checks in order:

1. Can you see your crease? Look for the fold of skin above your lash line. A visible crease, a hidden crease, or no crease at all is your first clue.

2. Where is the highest point of your eye? Trace your eye opening with your fingertip. Is the peak in the middle, toward the outer corner, or is the shape evenly curved?

3. Do your corners point up or down? Follow your natural lash line to each corner. A gentle upward tilt, a downward tilt, or perfectly level corners all point to different shapes.

4. How far apart are your eyes? Compare the gap between your eyes to the width of one eye. Roughly one eye-width apart is the classic balance; narrower or wider changes the game.

THE NINE EYE SHAPES, EXPLAINED

Beauty writing loves to simplify, but real faces are wonderfully varied — most of us are a blend of two shapes. Read the primary descriptions first, then check the secondary notes to find your combination.

ALMOND EYES

If the outer corners of your eyes turn up slightly and the widest point sits right across the middle, you have almond eyes — the shape most lash charts are designed around. Almost every lash style works, which makes almonds the easiest shape to shop for.

ROUND EYES

Round eyes are as wide as they are long, with a visible crease and a gentle curve on both the top and bottom lash line. You see more of the iris when you look straight ahead. Long, wing-tipped lashes lengthen round eyes beautifully; overly dense center-weighted styles can make them look wider still.

HOODED EYES

Hooded eyes have an extra layer of skin that folds down over the crease, so the lid looks smaller when open. If your crease vanishes when you look straight ahead, you are likely hooded. Curled, open styles with extra lift at the outer corner work best — they sit above the fold instead of hiding behind it.

MONOLID EYES

Monolids have little to no visible crease, giving a smooth, sleek lid line that is striking and modern. False lashes that follow the natural lash line with a soft upward sweep complement monolids perfectly — avoid styles so heavy they cover the entire lid.

DEEP-SET EYES

Deep-set eyes sit further back in the socket, with a brow bone that casts a shadow over the lid. You have strong, expressive brows and a more defined socket line. Lighter, wispier styles open up deep-set eyes without crowding them.

UPTURNED EYES

Upturned eyes tilt upward at the outer corners — the classic cat-eye geometry, often paired with a slight lift at the end of the brow. Accentuate the natural lift with outer-corner emphasis; you rarely need to correct anything.

DOWNTURNED EYES

If the outer corners of your eyes angle downward, you have downturned eyes. It is an elegant, soft look that benefits from a little visual lift — lashes that are longer at the outer corner do exactly that, drawing the eye upward.

CLOSE-SET EYES

Close-set eyes sit less than one eye-width apart. The goal is to create space between the eyes, so favor lashes that are fuller toward the outer corners and lighter near the inner corner.

WIDE-SET EYES

Wide-set eyes sit more than one eye-width apart. Inner-corner emphasis and evenly distributed length bring the eyes visually together, creating a balanced, harmonious frame.
