How to Layer Multiple Lashes for a High-Fashion Look
Want a high-fashion, editorial lash look without sitting in a chair for two hours? The answer is layering the right strips. But in my decade as a beauty editor, I've seen people try to fake it by stacking five lashes — and it never works. Here's the exact process I use for runway-style looks.
THE RIGHT BASE LASH FOR HIGH-FASHION LOOKS
Your base should be a wispy or flare lash that opens your eye shape. A simple crisscross strip with a thin band is ideal. The base is not supposed to be bold; it's the foundation that holds the whole look together.
Before you apply, curl your natural lashes and add a light coat of mascara. This gives the false strips something to grip and helps them blend in.
WHERE TO ADD THE SECOND LAYER
Apply your second lash only on the outer half of your eye. This is the classic high-fashion move. It pulls your eye up and outward, creating a lifted, fox-like effect. You can use a full lash and cut it in half, or buy half lashes.
Position the half lash slightly lower than your base lash at the outer corner. That tiny offset is what creates the fashion-forward, almost winged silhouette.
HOW TO COMBINE CURLS FOR A SHARP, EDITORIAL SHAPE
Pair a C-curl on the inner half with an L-curl on the outer half. The C-curl opens your eye. The L-curl lifts the outer corner. That combination gives you the sharp, angular shape you see on magazine covers.
If you don't have an L-curl lash, use two different lengths: a 10mm on the inner half and a 14mm on the outer half. The length jump creates a similar lift.
WHAT TO AVOID WHEN LAYERING
- Do not use two of the same lash. You get no dimension, just doubling.
- Do not start from the inner corner. It makes your eyes look narrow and overdone.
- Do not press down hard while attaching the second layer. You'll flatten the base lash and lose the curl.
Also avoid applying a second layer over the entire eye if you have hooded or monolid eyes. The outer half is usually enough to get the high-fashion effect without eating up your lid space.
BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER
When you layer this way, you get that structural, almost architectural look that reads as 'intentional' and expensive. And it doesn't require 30 minutes of fuss. You can get it in under ten minutes once you know your lashes.
