HOW TO KEEP LASHES SAFE IN YOUR LUGGAGE

how to keep lashes safe in your luggage

I once opened my makeup bag on a weekend trip to find my favorite pair of lashes folded in half with a kink that no amount of mascara could hide. It was my fault. I'd thrown them into the bottom of my tote next to a curling iron and hoped for the best. Never again.

WHY LASHES GET DESTROYED IN LUGGAGE

Strip lashes are surprisingly fragile. The band can bend, the fibers can crimp, and the glue (if you're wearing them) can react to heat and pressure in a checked bag. Even a sturdy-looking lash will lose its shape if it's pressed under a heavy sweater for six hours. And the worst part is the damage doesn't always show until you try to put them on at your destination.

HOW TO PACK LASHES SO THEY ARRIVE PERFECT

  1. Use the original plastic tray. If you still have the little clear case that the lashes came in, keep them on it. The tray holds the shape and keeps the band from folding.
  2. Put the tray inside a hard eyeglass case. This is the trick I use for every flight. Your glasses case is basically a tiny armored vehicle for your lashes.
  3. Wrap them in a microfiber cloth. If you don't have a tray, lay the lashes flat on a travel-sized microfiber cloth and roll the cloth into a loose cylinder — never fold it. The roll protects the curve of the band.
  4. Keep them out of checked luggage. Temperature changes in the cargo hold can warp the band, and handling is rougher. Always put lashes in your carry-on or personal item.
  5. Store them on top of your clothes. In your carry-on, don't bury them. Put the lash case between two soft items like folded tees so it stays cushioned.

WHAT TO DO IF A LASH GETS CRUSHED

Don't panic. If the band is kinked but not broken, hold it against the curve of your finger and gently steam it with a hair straightener or warm water. Be careful — too much heat can melt the fibers. If the fibers are crimped, a very light layer of mascara can sometimes mask it. But if the band is snapped, it's time to let them go.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN TRAVEL-FRIENDLY LASHES

The best travel lash is one that can take a little abuse and bounce back. That means a flexible fiber blend that doesn't permanently crimp, a band that's thin but strong enough to hold its shape, and a design that doesn't need a separate glue bottle fumbling around next to your passport. You also want something that can go from airplane seat to party in under five minutes, because that's the real reason you packed them.
