BEGINNER LASH TUTORIAL FOR HOODED EYES
Let me tell you about the first time I tried to put on false lashes. I was 19, standing in my dorm bathroom, hooded eyes staring back at me, and a pair of cheap falsies on the counter. Twenty minutes later, I was still holding a lash wand like a weapon, with adhesive on my chin and one lash stuck to my cheek. I gave up. Sound familiar?
THE MIRROR MOMENT
When you have hooded eyes, there is this specific moment of pure frustration. You follow the tutorial. You open your eye wide to apply the lash. And it presses against your upper lid, steals the little space you had, and makes you look worse. Like you lost a fight with a mascara wand. I was like you but worse — I avoided lashes for a decade because I thought my eyes were the problem. They were not. The lashes were. Hooded eyes need a completely different lash rulebook.
WHY HOODED EYES BREAK THE RULES
Here is the anatomy reality: hooded eyes have a fold of skin that covers part of the upper lid, right near the lash line. In beauty-nerd terms, that means the visible lid space is tiny. When you put on a lash with a long, straight band, it can hit the fold when you blink — pushing the lash off or making your eyes look even more closed. The fix is a lash that does not try to own the lid. It owns the lash line. That is the entire secret.
THE BEGINNER'S 5-STEP LASH ROUTINE FOR HOODED EYES
- MEASURE FIRST. Hold the lash up to your eye. Trim from the outer corner, not the inner. For hooded eyes, stop the lash a few millimeters before the outer edge — this prevents that poking-into-the-temple feeling.
- CURL YOUR NATURAL LASHES FIRST. Yes, even with false lashes. Curling your own lashes guarantees both lash lines line up. This is the number one beginner mistake: the false lash sits on top of a straight natural lash, so they split into two layers.
- APPLY A THIN LINE OF ADHESIVE AND WAIT. Apply adhesive along the band, then wait 15–20 seconds until it is tacky. Not longer, not shorter. Tacky adhesive grips; wet adhesive slides off.
- TUCK, DON'T SLAP. Look straight into the mirror, tilt your chin down slightly, and place the lash right on the lash line. Let the band glide along your natural lash roots. Press gently from the middle, then the outer corner, then the inner corner.
- PINCH THEM TOGETHER. Close your eye and gently pinch your natural lashes and the false lash together with your thumb and index finger. This fuses the two layers so a hooded fold cannot catch a separate edge.
THE 3 B'S: A BEGINNER'S SHORTHAND
You need three things from any lash you try:
- A BAND YOU CANNOT FEEL. Ultra-thin and flexible — not plastic-feeling.
- A BEND THAT MATCHES YOUR HOODED EYE. A strong C curl at the root works best.
- A BUILD THAT IS NOT TOO LONG. 10–12mm works beautifully. Save 14mm for your after-hours costume.
If a product page does not show the band thickness or the curl degree, run the other way. A good lash brand wants you to know exactly how it will sit on your eye.
BEGINNER FAQ: HOODED EYES, REAL ANSWERS
Are lashes harder to put on with hooded eyes?
Harder at first, easier forever after. Once you learn the tuck-and-pinch method, hooded eyes are actually a gift: the fold hides the lash band completely, so you get a seamless natural blend.
What kind of lashes are best for hooded eyes?
Lashes with a strong curl, a thin flexible band, and graduated lengths. Corner styles are especially flattering because they lift the outer edge.
Should I trim the inner corner or outer corner?
Trim from the outer corner. Keeping the inner corner shorter prevents poking and makes the lash blend more naturally with your eye shape.
Do I need eyeliner with hooded eyes?
No. One of the best things about hooded eyes is that a flattering false lash does the liner's job. The lash gives the eye structure without the risk of smudging onto the fold.
This is exactly why PHANSTA LASHES designs with hooded eyes in mind. Our la siesta corner lash uses a feather-light flexible band, a gentle C curl, and a 10–12mm outer-corner shape that works with your fold instead of against it. You can wear lashes without a twenty-minute wrestling match — I promise.
