WHY YOUR FALSE LASHES LOSE THEIR CURL IN HUMIDITY
Synthetic lash fibers themselves do not absorb water. The problem lives in the lash band. When the fabric band gets damp, it expands at the corners and gradually drops the curl. Add your natural skin oil and the oil in your sunscreen, and the band becomes a sliding board. That is why the outer corner is usually the first to peel.
HOW TO WATERPROOF YOUR LASHES IN 5 MINUTES
- Wipe the lash band with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Let dry for 15 seconds. This removes the manufacturing residue that keeps water clinging.
- Brush a thin layer of clear waterproof mascara or a coat of clear lash sealant over the top of the band, starting at the inner corner and moving out. Do not cover the bottom fibers.
- Wait 60 seconds for the coat to become tacky, then press the band down onto a clean flat surface with your finger. This helps the sealant stick evenly.
- Heat your lash curler with a blow dryer for 3 seconds (choose warm, not hot) and gently clamp the lash band for 5 seconds. The heat melts the sealant into the fiber and locks the curl.
- Let the lashes dry upside down on a tissue for 2 minutes. They are ready to apply like normal.
WHAT NOT TO DO (OR YOUR LASHES WILL LOSE THEIR SHAPE)
- Don't soak the lashes in water to clean them after waterproofing. That strips the sealant and re-curls the fibers.
- Don't use oil-based makeup remover near the band. Oil is the enemy of waterproofing.
- Don't leave them in a steamy bathroom while you shower. It re-humidifies the band.
- Don't apply a second coat before the first has dried — you will make the band stiff.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A WEATHERPROOF LASH
If the 5-minute ritual sounds like extra work, choose lashes with a thin elastic band made of a water-repellent material, not woven fabric. The fibers should have a smooth non-porous surface. A slight bend in the band means it can keep its curl even when wet. Check for a matte finish, because shiny lashes often mean an oil-based coating.
