How to Apply Lashes on Heavy-Lidded Eyes
If you have heavy or hooded lids, you already know the struggle. You buy the lashes everyone raves about. You wait for the glue to get tacky. You press the lash down… and ten minutes later, the inner corner is lifting. I've been there. I had a lash pop off during a friend's wedding toast. Another one shifted sideways while I was interviewing a celebrity. It's not you. It's the technique.
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz and we'll match you with the perfect lash style for your unique eye shape — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →After working on lashes for over a decade, I've learned one thing: heavy-lidded eyes just need a different approach. Not more glue. Not more patience. A completely different placement. Once you get it, your lashes can hold for 10+ hours without a single lift.
THE REAL REASON YOUR LASHES WON'T STAY
Heavy lids create pressure on the lash band. Every time you blink, that pressure pushes the band upward and away from your lash line. Strong glue is not the fix. Placement is.
Most people put lashes too high — right on the crease or the skin above the lash line. On a regular lid, that's forgiving. On a heavy lid, that space is the pressure zone. The band will peel within an hour.
The fix? The lash band must sit right against your natural lash roots, almost touching the waterline. That's where your lid can actually anchor the band.
THE 5-STEP METHOD THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
- Measure from the outer edge. Place the lash on your lid. If it reaches past your outer corner, trim from the outer end — not the inner. The inner corner is where lifting starts; extra length there is your enemy.
- Shape the band into a U. Hold both ends of the band and bend it gently for 10 seconds. This curves the band to match your eye's natural shape. This one step prevents the corners from popping.
- Apply a thin layer of glue to the band's edge. Wait 30 seconds. The glue should feel tacky when you touch it. Tacky glue grips; wet glue slips.
- Place the center first. Look straight into a mirror placed below your chin. Press the center of the band onto your lash line, then the outer corner, then the inner. This gives you 3 points of control instead of a blind sweep.
- Look down for 60 seconds. Press the band gently with your fingertip while looking down. This lets the glue bond without your lid fighting the movement.
That's it. Five steps. Without any special tools, expensive glue, or 20-minute drying rituals.
WHY MOST APPLICATION ADVICE FAILS YOU
Most tutorials are filmed on almond-shaped eyes. Almond eyes have a visible crease and low lid pressure. The methods they teach — "just press it down and it'll stick" — skip the two things heavy lids need: a curved band and precise lash-line contact.
If you have heavy lids, you may have already tried:
- Extra layers of glue — which makes the band stiffer and more likely to pop
- Glue on the outer corners only — which leaves the inner corner unanchored
- Fake lashes that are too long — which add weight and pull the band down
None of these address the actual mechanics. The band needs to be flexible, trimmed to fit, and parked on the lash line — not floating above it.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN LASHES FOR HEAVY LIDS
If you're shopping for lashes and you have heavy lids, look for three things:
- A thin, flexible band — it bends with your lid instead of fighting it
- Lightweight material — heavy fibers pull the band down and cause midday droop
- Variable length — short-to-long shapes that lift the eye without weighing it down
When a lash meets those three criteria, the 5-step method above becomes almost effortless.
