You know that moment in the mirror when your false lashes look less “glamorous” and more “surprised cartoon villain”? That was me with close-set eyes. My first strip lash went on straight, the glue held, and I still looked like my eyes were racing toward each other. The problem wasn’t the lash. It was how far it extended.

If you have close-set eyes, here is the answer you actually need: your lashes should extend just 2 to 4 millimeters past the outer corner of your eye. Not the inner corner. Not the middle. That little distance makes your eye look lifted, open, and balanced — without making your eyes look any closer together.

THE REAL ANSWER: EXTEND JUST PAST YOUR OUTER CORNER

For close-set eyes, lash extension placement is about the outside half of your lash line. When you apply or ask for a set, tell your artist to keep the inner two or three lashes short, or even skip them. Then let the length build gradually toward the outer corner.

Inner corner: 0 to 2 mm past your natural inner lash line
Center: your natural, comfortable length
Outer corner: 2 to 4 mm past the outer corner of your eye

That’s the whole formula. More than 4 mm starts to pull your eye sideways, which makes the area between your eyes feel more crowded. Less than 2 mm never gives you the lift a lash extension is supposed to deliver.

WHY MOST CLOSE-SET EYES GET THE PLACEMENT WRONG

Most lash artists default to a cat-eye map: longest lash at the outer corner. On close-set eyes, that’s the wrong instinct. A heavy outer wing creates a giant empty gap between your eyes. The eye looks stretched, not opened.

I learned this the hard way. My second set extended 7 mm past the outer corner. In bright bathroom light, it looked stunning. In normal daylight, my eyes looked like they were floating too far apart from my nose. The shift can be that dramatic.

THE 3-STEP PLACEMENT CHECK BEFORE YOU GLUE ANYTHING

Blink naturally. If the outer end of the lash presses into your temple or the skin near your eyebrow when you blink, it’s too long.
Use a cotton swab. Place it vertically at the outer corner of the eye. The tip of your lash should land on the center of the swab, not past it.
Look straight forward. The longest part of the lash should be no further out than the outer edge of your iris. That keeps the eye open without dragging it.

Do this check with your old lashes, too. Chances are you have been fighting a placement issue all along.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CLOSE-SET EYE LASH KIT

If you are buying false lashes at home, skip anything with a thick band and long inner corners. Look for lashes that already curve upward at the outer end. The band should be invisible so you can place it at a slight angle away from the nose. That angle does more work than any mascara ever will.
