How to Make False Lashes Look Natural on Hooded Eyes
Got hooded eyes? Then you know the struggle: you put on a pair of false lashes, open your eyes, and poof — half the lash disappears. It's not your fault. It's the shape. But there's a trick that changes everything, and I'll show you step by step.
WHY LASHES LOOK FAKE ON HOODED EYES
A hooded eye means a fold of skin sits over the crease. When you open your eyes, that fold covers some of your lashes — so if the lash is too long or too thick, it either vanishes or pokes out at the wrong angle. That's why you end up with lashes that look fine in the mirror but look odd in photos.
The goal isn't to avoid false lashes entirely. It's to pick a shape and placement that works with your fold, not against it.
THE 3-STEP TRICK THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
This is the routine I've shared with friends and clients with hooded eyes. It takes five minutes and makes all the difference.
- Trim the outer edge (not just the length) — Most hooded eyes only need the outer 3-4 lashes removed. Put the lash up against your eye and see exactly where your fold dips down. Trim from the outer corner, not the inner.
- Press the lash upward at the outer corner — Instead of applying the lash straight across your lash line, angle it slightly upward at the outer third. This lifts the fold and makes the lash visible.
- Use your fingertip to press the band into the crease — Wait 30 seconds after adhesive is tacky. Place the center, then press the outer edge up into that natural fold. This blends the lash band into the hood and keeps everything in place.
MY FAVORITE LASH SHAPES FOR HOODED EYES
- Wispy lashes — The gaps let your natural lid show through, so it feels less heavy.
- Layered lashes — The varying lengths create a "lifted" effect without needing a dramatic curl.
- Short to medium lengths (10-12mm) — Anything longer will push into your brow bone or get swallowed by the fold.
- Faux mink or silk fibers — Softer, thinner fibers weigh less and won't weigh down your lid.
COMMON MISTAKES TO STOP MAKING
- Choosing lashes that are too long — Longer isn't better for hooded eyes. It will literally hit the skin above your eye.
- Using a thick band — It adds a visible line that fights against the natural curve.
- Placing the lash too far down — If your lash sits on the waterline, it will blink forward and look fake.
- Skipping the curl on your natural lash — Curl your real lashes before applying the false pair so they can blend together.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN LASHES FOR HOODED EYES
When you're shopping, look for these three things:
- A natural taper — Each lash strand should start thin at the band and get thinner, not blunt.
- Lightweight material — An eye that feels heavy will droop all day. Soft, feathery fibers are a must.
- A band that disappears — Clear or dark thin bands are your friends. They mold to the fold and don't shine through.
