WEARING FALSE LASHES TO WORK: OFFICE APPROPRIATE LOOKS
Can you wear false lashes to work? The short answer is yes, but only if your lashes look like they're part of your makeup, not a costume.
I used to be the editor who wore full mink strips to the office and wondered why everyone asked if I was going to a gala. Let's be honest: a Tuesday editorial meeting is not a gala. I cringe thinking about it.
After a few years of trial and error, I've narrowed down exactly which lash looks work in an office environment — and which ones to leave at home. You can wear lashes to work without looking like you're going to a party.
5 OFFICE-APPROPRIATE LASH LOOKS THAT ACTUALLY WORK
Here are the five lash looks I recommend to friends with 9-to-5 jobs, client meetings, and Zoom calls.
- The “My Lashes But Better” Look. This is a natural-length lash on a transparent band. It gives your eyes clarity without announcing itself. If you don't want anyone to ask if you're wearing lashes, start here.
- The Soft Wisp. Wispy lashes have alternating lengths that mimic natural lashes. They look like your own lashes after a really good mascara day. Perfect for a normal Tuesday.
- The Short Cat Eye. A cat-eye shape doesn't have to be dramatic. A short cat eye with a subtle lift at the outer corner opens up your face and looks polished in meetings.
- The Natural Long. Long doesn't mean heavy. Look for lashes that are long but not dense. They make you look awake and put-together without appearing “done.”
- The Clean Volume. If your natural lashes are sparse, a light volume lash can be more work-appropriate than extensions. Choose a pair with a thin band and skip any style with extra flare on the ends.
RULES FOR WEARING LASHES AT WORK
These five rules save me from looking like I'm on the red carpet when I'm actually just presenting slides.
- Keep the lash under 12mm in length.
- Choose a transparent or dark matte band — shiny bands catch office light.
- Avoid lashes with obvious glitter or colored fibers.
- Pair your lashes with light eye makeup. Lashes + cut crease = too much for a normal office.
- Test them at home for 4 hours first. If they bother you by hour 2, they'll bother you by hour 6.
HOW TO MAKE THEM LAST ALL DAY
Office days are long. The worst feeling is a lash lifting during a presentation. Here's my routine:
- Do your eye makeup first.
- Apply the lash and let the glue set for 60 seconds.
- Press down along the lash line with a clean fingertip.
- Add a tiny dab of liner over the band to seal it.
- Finish with a setting spray — it helps the lash stay curled.
Using this routine, I've worn lashes through 10-hour workdays without a single lift.
WHEN TO SKIP THE LASHES
There are days when the lash is not your friend:
- If you have an early all-hands meeting and tend to rub your eyes.
- If your eyes are already watery from allergies.
- If you're wearing glasses all day and your lashes touch the lenses.
Other than that, a natural lash can be a serious confidence booster on a busy day. When you look down at your screen and catch a glimpse of your lashes, you feel like you actually have your life together.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN WORK-FRIENDLY LASHES
Office lashes need three things:
- Comfort for 8+ hours.
- A natural shape that doesn't scream “false.”
- Enough strength to survive lunch, coffee, and phone calls.
That's exactly why PHANSTA LASHES became my default for work. They're light enough to forget, subtle enough for the office, and they last longer than my calendar of meetings.
OFFICE LASH QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Are false lashes appropriate for a business casual office?
Yes, if they look natural. Choose a wispy or short cat eye style and keep your eyeshadow light.
How long do office lashes need to be?
Most natural lashes are around 10-12mm. For work, stay between 8-12mm depending on your natural lash length.
Can I wear the same lashes every day?
You can, if you clean and dry them after each use. Most strip lashes last 10-20 wears with proper care.
