Take small, sharp scissors and snip off the last 2 to 3 clusters of fibers on the outer corner. Cut at an angle, following the natural curve of your eye. This instantly softens the wing effect and makes the lash look more almond-shaped.

Thin out the density with a spoolie and your fingers. If the lash is too thick in the middle, use a clean spoolie to gently brush the fibers upward. Then, using your thumb and index finger, pinch the lash band and pull gently downward on the fibers. This loosens the tight grouping and separates the fibers, making them look less like a solid black stripe and more like individual lashes. The goal is to create airy gaps, not to remove entire sections.

THE SOFTENING TECHNIQUE: BLEND IT

Sometimes, the problem is not the length or the density—it is the harsh black line of the band. A dramatic lash often has a thick, opaque band that creates an unblended stripe across your lid. Fixing this is surprisingly easy.

Apply a thin line of brown or taupe eyeliner directly over the lash band, instead of black. This softens the contrast against your skin and makes the band visually disappear. If you don't wear eyeliner, take a small angled brush and dip it into a matte brown eyeshadow. Tap off the excess and press it gently along the lash band. The shadow melts the band into your lid, making the whole thing look diffused and natural.

Another trick that works like magic: curl your natural lashes and apply a light coat of brown mascara before you put on the falsies.
