MEET THE TWO CONTENDERS

Last month, a reader sent me two unopened lash boxes and wrote: “I don’t even know which one is which. My friend says tweed is better, my sister swears clusters are easier. Please settle this.” I laughed because I’ve been there — standing in the beauty aisle holding two tiny boxes that both look like a good idea and turn into a mess at 7 a.m.

Tweed lashes are basically traditional strip lashes with a hidden twist: the fibers are arranged in a woven or cross-hatched pattern across a thin band. You apply the entire strip at once. Clusters, on the other hand, are tiny groups of lash extensions (anywhere from 3 to 10 fibers) that you apply individually along the lash line. They’re usually banded in small sections that fit between your natural lashes.

THE APPLICATION TIME COMPARISON

For a full set, tweed lashes take 2 to 4 minutes. Clusters take 20 to 30 minutes the first time, and 10 to 15 minutes once you’re fast. I’ve applied both in my own bathroom; the time difference is exactly why I reach for tweed on a weekday and clusters only on weekends.

THE PAIN-IN-THE-BACKSIDE BREAKDOWN

Clusters are more customizable, no argument. You can add one cluster to a corner for a subtle lift. But they’re fussy. You need to place each cluster on the underside of your natural lashes, then press from above so they interlock. If you place one slightly crooked, it can poke your eyelid or look like a tiny spider. Tweed is the easier bridge between extensions and strip lashes.

Before you buy any lash, check the band material. Weave with a flexible cotton or silk thread that hugs your eye without sticking up.
