HOW TO REMOVE LASHES SAFELY AT HOME: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
You've had a long night. Your lashes feel heavy. You just want them off. So you pull — and three natural lashes come with them. Ouch. That's not just painful. It's damaging.
I've been there. In my early days, I ripped off strip lashes like I was removing a bandaid. My natural lashes became sparse, brittle, and uneven. It took months to grow them back. The truth is, removing lashes safely takes about 60 seconds longer than yanking them off. And it makes all the difference.
WHY LASH REMOVAL GOES WRONG
Most people damage their natural lashes because they're in a hurry or they don't have the right tools. The result is the same: broken lashes, irritated eyelids, and a longer regrowth period than you'd expect.
Your natural lashes have a lifecycle of about 90 days. Each lash grows, rests, and falls out on its own schedule. When you pull a lash out early, you interrupt that cycle. The new lash needs to start from scratch, which means you'll have a gap for weeks.
The solution isn't complicated. You just need the right method and a little patience.
WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START
Gather these items before you begin:
- Oil-based makeup remover — this breaks down lash adhesive faster than water-based removers
- Cotton pads or soft cloth — the softer, the better
- Cotton swabs — for precise application
- Clean towel — to protect your clothes and bedding
- Good lighting — you need to see exactly what you're doing
That's it. No special tools, no expensive products. Just the basics.
STEP-BY-STEP LASH REMOVAL
Follow these steps in order. Do not skip ahead.
- Wash your hands. This prevents bacteria from getting into your eyes.
- Saturate a cotton pad with oil-based remover. Press it gently against your closed eyelid. Hold it there for 20–30 seconds. This gives the remover time to dissolve the adhesive.
- Gently press and slide. With the pad still in place, slide it outward toward your temples. The lash should slide off easily. If it doesn't, stop. Apply more remover and wait another 20 seconds.
- Use a cotton swab for stubborn spots. Dip a swab in remover and gently work it along the lash band, lifting the band away from your skin.
- Repeat on the other eye. Always do both eyes, even if one lash came off easily.
The entire process should take about 2 minutes per eye. If you're pulling or tugging at any point, you're doing it wrong.
WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN REMOVING LASHES
These are the mistakes I see (and have made) that cause the most damage:
- Never pull from the outer corner. This puts the most tension on your natural lashes.
- Never use oil on your lashes and then reapply them. Oil residue will weaken the adhesive and cause them to lift.
- Never pick at lashes with your fingernails. Your nails are too sharp and can scratch your eyelid.
- Never sleep in your lashes. This causes them to bend, tangle, and pull on your natural lashes all night.
AFTER-REMOVAL CARE FOR YOUR NATURAL LASHES
Your lashes just went through a bit of an ordeal. Here's how to help them recover:
- Wash your lash line with a gentle cleanser to remove any adhesive residue.
- Apply a lash serum or a drop of castor oil to nourish your natural lashes.
- Wait 24 hours before applying new lashes. Give your lash line a break.
- Clean your strip lashes before storing them. Remove all adhesive and place them back in their case.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN LASH ADHESIVE
Good removal starts with good adhesive. If your adhesive is too strong, it bonds to your natural lashes instead of just the band. Here's what matters:
- Gentle bond that holds all day but releases with remover
- Drying time under 60 seconds — so you're not waiting forever
- No harsh fumes — your eyes shouldn't water during application
When the adhesive is right, removal is easy. When it's wrong, you'll feel it every time you take your lashes off.

FAQ
Can I remove strip lashes with just water?
No, water won't break down the adhesive. Use an oil-based makeup remover or a dedicated lash remover for best results.
How often should I replace my strip lashes?
With proper care, reusable lashes last 10–15 wears. Replace them when the band starts to lose its shape or the lashes look frayed.
Is it normal to lose some natural lashes during removal?
Losing 1–2 natural lashes per removal is normal. Losing 5 or more means you're being too rough or using the wrong remover.
