Last New Year’s Eve, I watched a friend try to glue craft glitter onto her lashes with nail glue. Ten minutes later, I was helping her unstick her eye with micellar water and a lot of patience. She spent the night with watery eyes and no photos after midnight.

I’m telling you this because I don’t want that to be you. You can absolutely get gorgeous glittery lashes for New Year’s Eve — you just have to do it the right way. As a beauty editor, I’ve seen the glitter-lash trend come back every holiday season. And every season, the emergency room gets a few visits from people who thought “glitter is glitter.”

WHY CRAFT GLITTER IS A NIGHTMARE

Craft glitter is cut with sharp edges that can scratch your cornea. When it’s mixed with adhesive, it turns into a gritty paste that clumps your lashes together. And the strong glue needed to hold craft glitter can pull out natural lashes when you remove it. That’s not a risk worth taking for a photo.

HOW TO ADD SPARKLE THE SAFE WAY

Use cosmetic-grade glitter. Look for “cosmetic” or “face safe” on the label. The particles are rounded and small enough not to scratch.
Mix a tiny pinch of glitter into your lash adhesive. Apply the mix to the tips of your existing strip lashes, not the band. Let it dry for two minutes.
Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the lash band and wait until it’s tacky. Then press the lash onto your eyelid as usual.
Set with a pigmented glitter eyeshadow. Using a stiff brush, pat a matching shadow over the dry glitter to keep it sealed.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GLITTER LASH

Pre-coated glitter tips that won’t flake or fall into your eyes. You still set them with adhesive, but the bulk of the work is already done.
A lightweight band — heavy glitter can drag down your eye shape and make you look tired by hour three.
Wispy lengths that keep the glitter just on the tips, so it catches the light without reading as a solid chunk.
Easy removal: if you have to soak or scrape to get glitter off, it’s not worth it. A good glitter lash should come off like a regular strip lash.

If you’re short on time, pre-made glitter lashes are the fastest route. They keep the glitter sealed in a clear, flexible coating, which means less chance of irritation and less cleanup.
