MONOLID LASH CURLING: WHY YOUR LASHES WON'T CURL (AND HOW TO FIX IT)

monolid lash curling: why your lashes won't curl (and how to fix it)

Let me guess. You've watched every YouTube tutorial. You've bought three different eyelash curlers. You've held the curler so long your eyelid cramped — and two minutes later, your lashes were straight again.

I've been there. Honestly, I thought I was doing something wrong. Turns out, I wasn't. Monolid lash curling is just... different. And once you understand why, everything changes.

WHY MONOLID LASHES WON'T HOLD A CURL

The problem isn't your technique. It's your eyelid structure.

Monolids don't have an eyelid crease. That crease acts like a natural hinge that lifts lashes upward. Without it, your lashes grow at a straighter angle and point downward. The lash shaft itself is often thicker and heavier, too — so when you curl it, there's nothing holding the new shape in place.

It's not your fault. It's physics.

THE CURLING TECHNIQUE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS

Here's the exact routine I use on my own stubborn lashes. It takes about 90 seconds.

  1. Start clean. Oil and mascara residue break the curl instantly. Wash and fully dry your lashes first.
  2. Warm the curler. Run a hair dryer on low over your eyelash curler for 3–5 seconds. Test it on your wrist first — warm, not hot.
  3. Clamp at the base. Position the curler at the very root of the lashes. Hold for 10 full seconds.
  4. Move to the middle. Release, shift the curler to the middle of the lash, clamp, and hold for 10 more seconds.
  5. Lock it in with waterproof mascara. One thin coat, root to tip. Waterproof formulas hold a curl far better because they don't contain water that weighs lashes back down.

Using the base-plus-mid hold method creates a natural C-curve instead of a bent L-shape.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LASH SOLUTION

Once you've mastered that technique, many of my monolid friends tell me they still want a put-on-and-go option that doesn't fight their natural eye shape. Here's what I tell them to look for:

  • Weightless design. Look for lashes that add lift without drooping your lid.
  • Flexible band. It should follow your eye's natural curve without pulling.
  • Center-heavy length. This opens up the eye and balances a monolid beautifully.

When a lash meets those three criteria, you get the look you've been chasing — without the frustration of fighting your eye shape every morning.

THE 10-SECOND SOLUTION

PHANSTA LASHES were designed for exactly this: weightless, flexible, center-lift styles that work with monolids — not against them. Get lifted, open-looking eyes in 10 seconds — no curlers, no mascara, no fight.

Why won't my monolid lashes hold a curl?

Monolids lack a natural eyelid crease that acts as a hinge to lift lashes. Without it, lashes grow straighter and point downward. Combined with thicker lash shafts, the shape doesn't set because nothing holds the bend in place.

What mascara is best for monolid lash curling?

Waterproof mascara is the best choice. Regular water-based formulas melt the curl as they dry. A thin coat of waterproof mascara locks the C-curve in place.

Can I wear false lashes with monolids without curling?

Yes. Flexible-band lashes with center-heavy length naturally open up monolid eyes. Weightless designs work best so they don't droop the lid.
