LIGHTWEIGHT VS HEAVY-LIDDED: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

A client told me she gave up on lash extensions for two years. Every set she tried made her feel like she was wearing tiny blinds on her eyes. Then I looked at her lid structure. She has heavy, hooded lids — and she was wearing thick, uniform lashes designed for wide, almond eyes. The fix wasn't less lash. It was a lighter shape with more taper.

DO YOU HAVE LIGHTWEIGHT OR HEAVY LIDS?

Quick self-test: close your eyes and press your fingertip lightly on your eyelid. If you feel a firm bounce, you have more tissue and likely heavy-lidded. If your eyelid feels like a thin layer of skin moving over the socket, you're lightweight. Heavy-lidded eyes need lashes with a longer stem to keep the fan away from the lid. Lightweight eyes can handle dense volume without feeling weighed down.

WHAT LIGHTWEIGHT LIDS CAN DO THAT HEAVY LIDS CAN'T

  • You can wear high-density volume (6D) because the base won't sit under pressure.
  • You can use relaxed curls (J and B) without the lashes falling into your lash line.
  • You can go longer (13-15mm) without the weight pulling the tip downward.

WHAT HEAVY LIDS NEED INSTEAD

If your lids are heavy, the goal is to create a subtle lift that doesn't fold into the crease. Use D or DL curl, which angles upward from the root. Keep the length at 10-12mm max. Tapered lashes help because they eliminate the weight at the tip, so the lash stays lifted all day.

WHY A LIGHTWEIGHT FEEL ISN'T THE SAME AS A LIGHTWEIGHT LID

Even if you have heavy lids, you can have a "lightweight" feel in your lash set. That comes from using fine bases and softer tips. The diameter of the fan base is what your eyelid feels, not the length. A 0.03mm base on a 12mm lash feels lighter than a 0.07mm base on a 9mm lash.

How do I know if my lids are heavy?

If you look in the mirror and your eyelid skin covers most of your crease when your eyes are open, you have heavy lids. If you can see your crease fully, you're likely average or lightweight.

Can I still get volume if I have heavy lids?

Yes. Choose 2D or 3D volume with a D curl and 0.03mm base. Avoid cat-eye mapping because it pulls the outer corner down.
