HOW TO MAKE LASHES LAST ALL NIGHT ON NYE
You've spent an hour on your makeup. By midnight, your lashes are lifting at the inner corner. I've been that girl. It's not your glue. It's the way you prep. I've tested lash survival in mosh pits, summer weddings, and one particularly sweaty New Year's Eve. Here's what actually works.
WHY LASHES FALL OFF BEFORE MIDNIGHT
Your eyelid produces oil that breaks down the glue bond. During a party, that oil production can triple. Add in sweat and heat from dancing, and the inner corner of your band — the thinnest part — loses grip first. Another factor is mascara. Layering mascara on top of your false lashes sticks the hairs together and adds weight. 70% of lash lifts I see at the club happen because mascara weighs the band down.
THE THREE-STEP PREP THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
- Clean your lash line completely. Wipe your eyelids with a toner pad. Any leftover eye cream will make the band slip like a skate on ice.
- Powder the glue. Apply a thin coat of adhesive to the band, blow on it for 30 seconds, then dip the band in loose powder. This creates a matte, grippy surface.
- Press center with a specific hold. Place the center of the lash first, then press each corner down with a clean finger for 10 seconds. This gives the glue time to set.
HOW TO FIX A LIFTING LASH (AND WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR CLUTCH)
If you're wearing strips, use a tiny piece of tape to press the inner corner back down. If you're wearing individual lashes, find the loose knot and add one dot of adhesive to the base. Place it back on your lash line.
And this is what you need in your bag:
- Small pair of tweezers
- Mini tube of clear adhesive
- Pocket blank eye blotting papers
- Spare pair of lashes in case of emergency
- A reliable friend who's good at applying lashes
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long before NYE should I put on my lashes?
Don't wait until you're in the taxi. Place them at least 2 hours before you leave. This gives the glue time to cure fully, making the bond up to 3 times stronger.
Can I use eyelash curler after applying?
Skip it. Curling after can break the glue bond. If you need more curl, heat your lash curler for 5 seconds with a hair dryer just before you place them.
Should I apply mascara before or after?
Apply false lashes first, then use a clean spoolie to brush your natural lashes upward into the false lash. This way you don't weigh the lash down.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LASH THAT LASTS ALL NIGHT
Lashes that survive a night out have three important traits:
- Flexible band: Hard plastic bands don't follow your eye movement, so they lift. Look for a band that can bend 90 degrees without cracking.
- Featherlight total weight: Heavy lashes tug and break the glue bond. Aim for a set that weighs under 0.8 grams for the full pair.
- Easy retouching: If you lose a lash, you should be able to pop a fresh one on without removing your entire eye makeup.
That last point is why I secretly steer people toward individual knots for party nights.
Go into the new year with lashes that last.
