HOW TO MAKE LASHES MORE FLEXIBLE AND COMFORTABLE

how to make lashes more flexible and comfortable

IF YOUR LASHES POKE YOU, THIS IS FOR YOU

Almost every reader who writes to me about lash pain says the same thing: “They look amazing, but after an hour, I can’t wait to rip them off.” That’s not normal. If you’re still feeling the band or the fibers, something is wrong — and it’s not your eyes. It’s the way the lashes are made, and the way you’ve been applying them.

WHY LASHES FEEL STIFF (AND WHY YOUR EYES WATER)

Flexibility is determined by the band’s material and the way fibers are attached. Many strips use a thick polyurethane band that doesn’t bend with your lid. When you blink, the band pulls on your eyelid, and your eye screams for help by creating extra tear film. That’s the watering. Fibers that are straight instead of curled can also brush against the upper edge of your eye, making you feel like something is in there.

HOW TO SOFTEN AND SHAPE LASHES IN 60 SECONDS

  1. Blow with warm air from a hairdryer from a distance, about 10 seconds, to make the band slightly plyable.
  2. Wrap the lash around a makeup bottle or brush handle to curve the band. Hold it for 30 seconds.
  3. Repeat if needed. Don’t ever heat them directly over a flame — that’s a fire hazard and ruins lashes.

HOW TO APPLY FOR COMFORT (THE STEP EVERYONE SKIPS)

Measure the lash against your eye and trim the outer corner — not the inner corner. Most of us skip that step. Then apply a thin layer of adhesive to the band and wait 20 seconds until it gets tacky. Finally, press the center of the band onto your lash line first, then adjust the corners. This small change prevents the band from pushing against your tear duct.

Why do my lashes poke my eye even when I trim them?

You might be trimming the inner corner too much, or the fibers are pointing straight ahead instead of angled upward. Look for lashes with a natural curl and trim from the outer end only.

Can I wear silicone-based lashes if I have sensitive eyes?

Yes, silicone lashes are naturally flexible and hold a curl. But avoid brands that use liquid latex in the band, which is a common irritant.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A FLEXIBLE LASH

When you shop, bend the band between your fingers in the store. If it has no give, it won’t be comfortable. Also look for lashes with a “knot-free” or “flat” band — they sit on the waterline instead of digging in.
