How to Fix Uneven Lash Application Fast
I know exactly what it feels like when you open your eyes after applying falsies and one side looks fabulous while the other looks like it’s melting. My record is four tries in one morning. The outer corner kept lifting no matter what I did. My friend once laughed and said, “Are you trying to wink?” Not my proudest moment.
Honestly, most uneven lash issues come from three mistakes: the strip is placed too high, too low, or at the wrong angle. The great news? You can fix all three without starting over.
WHY YOUR LASHES LOOK DIFFERENT ON EACH EYE
Most people have one eye that is slightly higher, narrower, or rounder than the other. If you place the same lash strip in the exact same spot on both eyes, they will look different because your eyes are different. That is normal. That happens to makeup artists too.
The other problem is the lash band itself. Strip lashes are manufactured with one curve. But your eye is not a perfect half-moon. So if you just press the strip straight on, you will get a gap at the inner corner on one side and a gap at the outer corner on the other.
THE 60-SECOND FIX
Here is the fastest way to correct a crooked lash:
- Gently pull the lash off by the outer corner. Don’t rip it. The glue should still be tacky.
- Now hold the lash strip against the center of your eye first, not the inner corner. Yes, center first.
- While looking down, press the center of the band onto your skin just above your real lashes. Wait 10 seconds.
- Then press the inner corner, then the outer corner. You force the band to match your lid instead of forcing your lid to match the strip.
- Check with your chin down and eyes open in the mirror. That position shows the true lash angle.
If the lash is too high, it will float and look fake. If it is too low, it will poke your eyelid and cause a droopy look. Center-first pressing solves both because it lets the band settle onto the natural curve.
WHEN THE LASH IS STILL UNEVEN AFTER FIVE MINUTES
Sometimes you really need to start over. And that is okay. But there is a trick to avoid another 15-minute struggle:
- Use individual clusters for the problem side. You can place 3 small clusters exactly where the strip won’t stay.
- Swap the lash strips between eyes. Put the left lashes on the right eye. This sounds crazy, but it works because the manufactured curve often matches the other eye better.
- Fold your lash band gently into a circle for a few seconds. That helps the band remember a more universal curve.
- Cut off the outer end of the strip. A lift at the end is often caused by too long a strip for your eye.
THINKING BACK TO THE ROOT CAUSE
When I finally solved my own uneven lash problem, I realized it was the band shape all along. The lash strips I used before were stiff. They had no give. So no matter how good my technique was, they would pop up on one side by noon.
Once I switched to lashes with a softer, thinner band, the problem nearly disappeared. The band hugged my natural lash line without me having to wrestle it. This is the buying criterion I now check as a beauty editor: if the band is thinner than 0.04 inches and bends back without breaking, it will save you from the uneven lash struggle.
The right lash does the work for you. You don’t need to be a licensed lash tech to get a symmetrical look. You just need a lash that lightly hugs your lid, so your sides match naturally. PHANSTA LASHES are exactly that. Their thin, flexible bands curve to your eye shape, so you get the same beautiful feel on both sides. My uneven lash days are officially behind me.
How do I know if my lashes are too far from my lash line?
If you can see a gap of skin between the lash line and the band, it is too high. Apply the lash so the band sits directly on the skin where you would draw eyeliner.
Can I trim a false lash strip to fit my eye?
Yes. Trim from the outer edge — never from the inner corner. That way the inner corner stays aligned with your eye shape.
Why does my left lash always lift faster than the right?
Because your left eye and right eye are structured differently. One side may have an oilier brow or more hooded skin. Try pressing the left lash for 5 extra seconds and use an oil-free eye primer.
