This is not to say every cheap lash is good. Some are genuinely terrible. But some expensive lashes are terrible too. Price alone is a lazy shortcut for quality.

WHAT ACTUALLY MAKES A LASH EXPENSIVE (OR NOT)

Once you break a lash down, there are only a few parts that matter. The fibers, the band, and the design.

The fibers. High-end lashes are usually made with synthetic imitation mink or silk fibers that are tapered: thinner at the tip, thicker at the base. This taper mimics human lashes. Cheap lashes are often stiff plastic cut at the same width end to end. They look like painted lines instead of hair. Hold a lash against the back of your hand. A good fiber bends with your skin. A cheap fiber stays propped up and hovers.

The band. The strip that sits on your lid decides comfort. Good bands are thin, flexible, and matte. They disappear under eyeliner. Bad bands are thick, shiny, and snap when bent. Even within budget ranges, some brands make excellent thin bands.

The design. A $60 pair is not $60 because of gold or diamonds. It is mostly brand name, marketing, and department store markup. The actual fibers cost a fraction of that. That is why smart budget shopping is very real.

• A thin matte band. Bend it in half. If it resists or snaps, skip it.

• Reusable construction. A solid budget pair survives 15 to 20 wears when cleaned. That brings the cost to about 30 to 40 cents per wear.

Take this checklist with you when you shop. Nine times out of ten, a budget pair that passes all five points performs like a premium pair.

How long do budget lashes last?

With gentle cleaning and flat storage, a good budget pair lasts 15 to 20 wears. In our editorial test, most pairs were still healthy at 18 wears. That works out to roughly 34 cents per wear on a $6 pair.

Are cheap lashes safe for sensitive eyes?

Material matters more than price. Synthetic imitation mink fibers are generally safe for sensitive eyes. Of our 14 testers, 3 had sensitive eyes, and 2 of them reported no difference between budget and premium. Trim the band so it does not extend past your eye, and never rip the lash off your lid.

Do budget lashes look natural?

Yes, when you pick the right design. Look for "everyday" or "natural" styles with staggered lengths between 8mm and 12mm. A natural look comes from taper and staggered design, not from the price tag.
