Summer Pool Party Lashes: Chlorine and Water Tips
A pool party in August is a perfect mix of sunshine, cold drinks, and chlorine-smelling hair. But if you wear falsies, your first thought is probably: 'Are my lashes going to survive?' I lost a pair in a hot tub once, and I still remember that panic of feeling one eye go bare. The short answer is yes — if you follow the same water rules swimmers swear by for their makeup.
HOW TO SWIM WITHOUT SACRIFICING YOUR LASHES: 7 POOL-PROOF RULES
- Wait 30 minutes before getting in. Let the bond set completely. Chlorine can weaken a fresh bond in 10–15 seconds if it gets underneath the band.
- Use a quick-dry seal. A tiny bit of waterproof lash sealant (applied with a spoolie) can add 2–3 extra hours of hold.
- Avoid oil-based sunscreen on your eyes. Oils break down the lash adhesive faster than chlorine does. Use mineral sunscreen around your eyes.
- Blot, don't rub drying. After a dip, press a towel gently against your eyes. Rubbing twists the band and peels it up.
- Rinse with fresh water. Chlorine pool water leaves residue. Rinse your lashes under a fresh shower before you reapply.
- Carry a backup pair. In your pool bag, a small lash liner and a spare set mean no one has to see the 'after pool' disasters.
- Take them off if you plan to swim laps. If you're doing actual laps, not just floating, your lashes have to go. Real pool training (over 1 hour) will loosen almost any lash.
I know it's tempting to feel like your lashes are invincible. But a little prep means you can cannonball off the deep end and still look polished at the after-party.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN POOL-PROOF LASHES
Not all lash styles are water-resistant. Look for a thin, flexible band that doesn't swell. Straight bands hide better in water. Also, lashes with a slight upward curl at the outer edge resist drooping when wet. And choose a style with a light, airy material. Some heavy synthetic fibers soak up water and pull away.
