YOUR LASHES AREN'T DIRTY — THEY'RE MATTED (AND IT'S FIXABLE)

I know a lot of people who gave up on reusable lashes because they looked “wrinkly” or “stiff” after two wears. The truth is, your lashes aren’t dirty in the usual sense. They’re coated in a mix of old adhesive, facial oil, and eye makeup residue. That mixture dries into a stiff crust that makes the band curl away from your lid.

In my 12 years of testing lashes, I’ve found that a simple 4-minute routine can bring most pairs back to 95% of their original shape. Here’s exactly what I do.

THE 4-MINUTE CLEANING METHOD THAT MAKES LASHES LOOK NEW

1. Peel the glue, don’t scrub it. Gently pinch the dried glue dot with tweezers and pull it off the band. Rolling it between your fingers helps loosen it.
2. Soak in oil-free makeup remover for 30 seconds. Use a shallow dish with a few drops. Never use coconut oil — it leaves residue that weakens the lash band.
3. Brush with a spoolie. Lay the lash on a flat surface and brush the lash fibers in a back-and-forth motion. This lifts dust and makeup from between the hairs.
4. Rinse and air-dry. Shake off the excess, then let it dry on a towel with the band curved in its natural shape. It’s ready to use in 10 minutes, but I prefer overnight.

WHAT NOT TO DO (OR YOU'LL RUIN THEM IN ONE USE)

• Don’t use hot water. It can melt or warp the lash fibers.
• Don’t soak them in regular makeup remover with oil. Oil breaks down the adhesive that holds the fibers together.
• Don’t wipe them with a wet wipe while they’re on your eye. This bends the band and can pull out fibers.
• Don’t use a metal comb. Always plastic or silicone.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN REUSABLE LASHES

Not all lashes are meant to last 10 wears. Some cheap ones lose fibers after the first cleaning. For real reuse, look for lash bands that are heat-pressed rather than glued, and fibers that are tied or knotted onto the band instead of just inserted. This may cost a little more (around £10–12 per pair vs £5), but that’s less than £1 per wear.

Can I clean lash glue off with just water?

No. You still need an oil-free remover to break down the adhesive that sticks to the fibers. Water alone will just move the glue around.

How often should I clean my reusable lashes?

After every wear, especially if you wear eye makeup. If you let them sit dirty, the oils dry into a crust that’s harder to remove.
