A STORY: SARAH AND HER 'BUG EYES'

Last week, a reader named Sarah wrote to me. She has beautiful prominent eyes, but every lash she tried made her look 'bug-eyed' or like a deer in headlights. One pair was too curly, lifting so high that she looked shocked. Another pair was too flat, pointing straight out and emphasizing the roundness of her eye. There was no middle ground. Sarah is not alone. Prominent eyes are stunning, but they need a specific kind of lash to stay balanced.

WHY PROMINENT EYES REACT SO STRONGLY TO CURL

Prominent eyes sit slightly further forward in the socket. That means your lashes are seen from a different angle than someone with hooded or deep-set eyes. A flat J-curl can stick straight out, making the eye look wider and more protruding. An extreme L-curl can pull the attention upward and make the eyes look alarmed. A balanced curl, usually a C or a soft D, creates a shadow that frames the eye naturally and draws attention outward, not downward.

THE GOLDILOCKS CURL: NOT TOO FLAT, NOT TOO CURVED

Think of the C curl as the starting point. It lifts just enough to open the eye without changing the natural shape of your lid. If you want more drama, choose a D curl but only if your lash line is not too straight. Avoid J, B, or L curls. And skip 'super curly' styles that are designed for extremely hooded lids — they will overpower prominent eyes. The goal is a curl that frames your iris and makes your eye look bright, not bulgy.

What lash length is best for prominent eyes?

Keep lengths between 8mm and 12mm. If you go too long, you risk hitting the brow bone when you blink, which is distracting and uncomfortable. The outer corner should be the longest part to elongate the eye.

Should I choose a thin or thick band?

Thin, flexible bands are essential. A thick band adds weight to the lid and can make prominent eyes look smaller. A thin band also allows you to place the lash exactly where you need it without lifting the lid.
