Myth: Eyelash Glue Is Permanent

myth: eyelash glue is permanent

THE PANIC OF A GLUED LASH NEVER COMING OFF

Last week a reader named Sarah D. emailed me in a panic. She wore strip lashes to her sister's wedding, and two days later she was convinced the glue had fused to her natural lashes forever. She tried pulling them off โ€” ouch. She tried olive oil. Nothing worked. She was ready to schedule a salon removal. Was she overreacting? Mostly, yes.

"I thought I was stuck with these lashes for life," she wrote. "I felt so dumb."

WHY THE MYTH WON'T GO AWAY

That fear comes from old-school formulations and scary YouTube videos. Strip lash glue is made with synthetic latex or acrylic adhesives. They're water-resistant but not permanent. The word "permanent" probably came from comparing lash glue to nail glue. But your lashes aren't nails.

With the right remover and patience, any strip lash glue will release. The problem is when people use the wrong technique โ€” like pulling the lash off by the outer corner dry. That hurts, and it makes you think something is stuck.

THE TRUTH ABOUT EYELASH GLUE REMOVAL

Here's the safe, effective way to remove any strip lash:

  1. Soak a cotton pad with oil-free makeup remover (or even baby oil, but avoid on the waterline).
  2. Press the pad onto your lash line and hold for 30 seconds.
  3. Slide the lash off gently. It should release on its own.
  4. If glue remains on your natural lashes, dip a spoolie in remover and sweep it through the lashes. The glue will dissolve in seconds.

The truth is, eyelash glue is designed to stick strongly, securely, but temporarily. "Permanent" is a myth. Even professional lash extension glue breaks down with the right solvent โ€” and strip lash glue is far gentler.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can eyelash glue permanently damage your natural lashes?

No. If you pull lashes out by force, you can cause breakage. But the glue itself doesn't damage hair follicles. Remove gently and your natural lashes will be fine.

What dissolves eyelash glue fast?

Oil-based removers work best, but use them carefully. A concentrated eye makeup remover will break down the adhesive in 20โ€“30 seconds. Never use acetone.

Is strip lash glue the same as extension glue?

No. Strip lash glue is an adhesive for temporary DIY wear. Extension glue contains cyanoacrylate and is meant for professionals. They are completely different formulas.
