HOW TO TRIM FALSE LASHES FOR SMALL EYES PERFECTLY
You know the feeling: you spend ten minutes getting your lashes perfect, blink once, and the inner corner stabs you right in the eye. Then by dinner, the outer corner is lifting, and you spend the whole night trying not to squint.
The truth is, false lashes rarely fit straight out of the box. Makers design them for an average eye, but small eyes are usually 2โ4mm shorter. That tiny difference changes everything. Once you trim them the right way, they stop poking, stop lifting, and finally stay exactly where you put them. I have been there โ I trimmed lashes in a subway car, a taxi, and once over a bathroom sink at a wedding. This method works every time.
MEASURE ONCE, TRIM SMART
Grab your lashes and hold them up to your eye before you remove the band. The lash should start just before your natural lash line begins and end at the outer corner. If it passes your outer corner, you have too much lash. Most small eyes only need to remove 2โ4mm, not half a centimeter. Less really is more โ trimming too much ruins the shape and makes the lash look stumpy.
- Place the strip gently on your lid before applying any adhesive. Look straight ahead.
- Use a small pair of cuticle scissors or precision scissors, never kitchen scissors.
- Mark the exact spot where the band passes your outer corner with a tiny dot of eyeliner or a clean toothpick.
- Trim from the outer edge, not the inner edge. The inner corner needs to stay narrow so it doesn't poke.
- Cut only the band, not the lash hairs, for the first pass. If it still touches your brow bone, clip 1mm off the hairs at a slight angle.
After trimming, set the lash on your hand to check the new curve. If it sits flat and the corners lie down, you are ready.
WHY THE OUTER-EDGE RULE WORKS
Most lash strips are straight across the bottom, but your lash line curves. The inner corner of your eye is lower and more delicate. When you trim the inner edge, you change the angle and create a gap that lifts all night. The outer edge is where you have the most space, so removing length there preserves the natural lift. This one habit fixes the number one complaint I hear: 'My lashes stick up at the corners.'
LASH SHAPES THAT FLATTER SMALL EYES
- Wispy or crisscross styles open the eye without making it look heavy.
- Tapered lashes, longer in the middle and shorter at both corners, create a rounder look.
- Half-lashes are a shortcut if you are new to trimming; they only cover the outer half and naturally skip the inner corner problem.
- Skip overly thick bands. They add weight and shorten your lash line visually.
Think about the outcome you want: wide-awake, soft, and 'not wearing falsies' strong. A small eye does not need drama from length. It needs drama from placement.
FAST-FIX QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE
Should I trim before or after curling my natural lashes?
Before. Curl your natural lashes first so you can see where the false lash should sit. Then measure and trim.
Why do my lashes still poke after I trim the band?
You might be trimming the inner edge or not trimming enough from the outer edge. Start over with a fresh pair and remove only 1mm at a time.
Can I reuse lashes after trimming them?
Yes. Trimmed lashes keep their shape for several wears if you clean them after each use and store them in the original tray.
WHAT GOOD LASHES FOR SMALL EYES SHOULD HAVE
After all this measuring, you want a lash that works with your eye, not against it. Look for a flexible band that follows your curve, a lightweight material that does not droop, and a length that already runs shorter on the inner edge. If a brand makes eye-size-friendly lashes with a soft, tapered shape, you will spend less time fixing and more time getting compliments.
That is exactly why I trust PHANSTA LASHES for my own small eyes. Their lash trays are designed with shorter inner corners and flexible bands, so my falsies behave. I put my money where my lashes are โ and with PHANSTA, I can finally blink without playing defense.
