WHAT DOES “CRUELTY-FREE” REALLY MEAN?

When you flip a lash box and see “cruelty-free,” you want to believe it. But in many countries, that phrase isn’t legally enforced. It can mean the brand didn’t test on animals. It can also mean just the eyelash fibers were not tested, while the glue or dyes were tested somewhere else. That’s a gap you can see.

I remember staring at my first “vegan lashes” and feeling proud. Then I found out they were actually made from silk. Silk comes from silkworms. That’s not vegan. So I had to learn about lash materials the hard way — and you don’t have to.

MATERIALS THAT ARE ACTUALLY CRUELTY-FREE

• Synthetic fiber (PBT or polyester): A plastic-based fiber that mimics natural lash hair. No animals involved, easy to clean, and usually the most affordable.
• Vegan silk: An artificial version of silk made from synthetic materials. It’s soft and shiny but still 100% animal-free.
• Banana fiber or other plant fibers: Less common, but some brands experiment with plant-based materials. Check that the full product is free of beeswax or other animal byproducts.
• Mink and real silk: Animal-derived. Mink fur is often plucked or farmed, and silk uses silkworm pupae.

The label “vegan” is stronger than “cruelty-free” because it tells you no animal products went in. But you still need a trustworthy brand. In the U.S., animal testing for cosmetics isn’t completely banned. In the EU, it has been banned since 2013 for cosmetics and their ingredients. So a brand that wants to sell in the EU has to follow stricter rules.

HOW TO SPOT A TRULY CRUELTY-FREE BRAND

1. Look for a third-party certification like Leaping Bunny or PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies.
2. Check the glue, the dye, and the fibers — not just the word “cruelty-free.”
3. Read the ingredient list. If a lash is “silk,” ask if it’s “vegan silk” or actual silk.
4. Search how the brand answers customer questions about animal testing. If it’s vague, treat it as a red flag.
