Beginner Lash Mistakes: 7 Common Errors and Fixes
I need to tell you about my first attempt with strip lashes. I peeled them out of the box, slapped them on over my eyeshadow, pressed hard, and then blinked once. That lash flew across the bathroom floor. By the time I retrieved it, it had picked up enough lint to qualify as a dust cloth. If you are new to lashes, I know exactly how this feels. I have lived it. But here is the thing: every single mistake I made is completely avoidable once you know what to watch for.
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz and we'll match you with the perfect lash style for your unique eye shape — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →THE 7 MOST COMMON BEGINNER LASH MISTAKES
- NOT MEASURING THE LASH BAND. Your lash band needs to fit your eye width. Most come longer than you need. Hold them against your eye and snip the outer edge if they pass your eye line. Skipping this gives you a lash that peels at the corners all day.
- APPLYING ON A DIRTY BASE. Makeup residue, oil, and old mascara make it impossible for the lash to stay. Your eye needs a clean, dry base. I know you want to rush. Don't.
- CHOOSING A STYLE THAT'S TOO DRAMATIC FOR YOU. If you are new, don't buy the most dramatic pair you find. Start with a natural style — something that looks like your own lashes, just better. You can go more dramatic once you get the hang of it.
- RUSHING THE WAIT. You need to let the lash adhesive sit for 30 seconds to get tacky before applying. If you apply it while wet, the lash will slide off your lid.
- PRESSING TOO HARD OR TOO SOFT. Gently press the lash into place starting at the inner corner, then pressing outward. Too hard and you squeeze the adhesive out. Too soft and the lash doesn't make full contact.
- NOT TRIMMING THE OUTER EDGE. If you skip this, the outer edge can poke into your skin after hours of wear. That is as painful as it sounds.
- PEELING THEM OFF AT NIGHT. Peeling pulls your natural lashes out. Gently remove with a makeup remover, and your natural lashes will stay healthy.
HOW TO FIX EACH MISTAKE ON YOUR NEXT TRY
These fixes take less than two extra minutes and make a world of difference:
- Measure and trim: 1 minute
- Clean your eyes: 30 seconds
- Choose natural styles: no extra time
- Wait for adhesive to get tacky: 30 seconds
- Press gently from inner to outer: practice makes it second nature
- Always trim outer edges: 1 minute
- Remove gently with remover: 2 minutes
It is honestly just a matter of building the habit. Once you do, applying lashes takes under ten minutes and looks like you got them done professionally.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR FIRST LASH SET
Keep it simple. The best first set is:
- Natural style with varied lengths — not a uniform strip
- Lightweight band — your lids should not feel weighed down
- Matte or semi-matte finish (glossy bands look fake)
- Reusable quality — beginner mistakes happen, so you'll want multiple tries
That's it. These 4 things make the learning process much friendlier.
