How to Apply False Lashes Perfectly in 6 Steps
Two years ago, I watched my best friend cry in a parking lot because she couldn't get her false lashes to stay on. Her eyes were red, the lashes were crooked, and we were late to a wedding. That night, I decided to break down the perfect application into six simple steps that anyone can follow.
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz and we'll match you with the perfect lash style for your unique eye shape — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →Here is the exact process I use. It takes 6 to 8 minutes the first time, and with practice, you'll do it in under 5. You'll never go back to skipping lashes.
THE 6-STEP PERFECT APPLICATION
- Cleanse and dry your lash line. Any oil will stop the adhesive from sticking. Use a cotton pad with eye makeup remover and wait 30 seconds.
- Measure and trim. Hold the strip against your lash line. It should start from where your lashes begin and end just before the outer corner. Trim any extra from the outside.
- Curl your natural lashes. This helps your real lashes blend with the false ones. Even better, use a warm eyelash curler for a curl that lasts.
- Apply a thin strip of adhesive. Wait 30 to 60 seconds until it gets tacky. This is the most important step — most people apply too soon.
- Place the lash in the middle first. Gently press the center of the band onto your lash line, then adjust the inner and outer corners.
- Press, squint, and blend. Use your fingers to press the lashes together. That's it.
WHY MOST PEOPLE MESS UP
Nine times out of ten, it's because they skip the tacky step. If the adhesive is still wet, the lash slides. If it's too dry, it won't stick. The sweet spot is around 40 seconds. Also, don't press down hard on the lash while placing. Light pressure is enough.
BUYING A LASH THAT MAKES APPLICATION EASIER
Even with the perfect steps, some lashes are just harder than others. Look for a flexible band, an eye-matching length, and a style that isn't too dense. When you have all three, your 6-step routine becomes a 4-step one.
LASH APPLICATION Q&A
How long do false lashes last when applied perfectly?
If you apply them correctly, they can stay in place 12 to 18 hours. A good adhesive and clean lash line are the secrets.
Should I apply mascara before or after false lashes?
Always before. Mascara after can clump with the false lash fibers and tug on the band.
Why do my lashes separate from the inner corner?
Usually because the band didn't get enough adhesive there, or you placed it too close to your tear duct. Leave a small gap at the inner corner.
