HOW TO WEAR LASHES WITH HOODED EYES: NO TRANSFER

how to wear lashes with hooded eyes: no transfer

THE HOODED EYE FRUSTRATION

You put on a beautiful pair of lashes, look in the mirror, and see... nothing. Or worse, you see a heavy strip sitting on top of your eyelid, weighing it down. Then, an hour later, you look in the bathroom mirror and see a black smudge on your upper lid. The transfer. The bane of every hooded eye owner.

I know this struggle intimately. I have hooded eyes. For years, I thought I just could not wear lashes. Every tutorial seemed designed for people with lots of lid space. They would place the lash high, and it would look amazing. I would try the same thing, and it would disappear into the crease of my eye.

Here is the truth: Hooded eyes do not need less lash. They need a different lash strategy.

Let me break down why transfer happens and exactly how to fix it.

WHY TRANSFER HAPPENS ON HOODED EYES

Transfer is not a lash problem. It is a geometry problem.

Your eyelid skin folds over your lash line. When you open your eyes, that skin presses against your lashes. If your lashes curl upward too aggressively, or if they are too long, they touch the skin above your crease and rub off.

Also, the placement matters. If you place the lash too high on your eyelid, the natural crease pushes it down. It creates a sandwich effect. The lash is squeezed between your natural lash line and your hood.

This causes two issues: transfer (the black smudge) and the lash popping off mid-day.

THE SOLUTION: CURL, PLACEMENT, AND STYLE

There are three things you need to adjust. This is not a one-trick fix. It is a complete approach.

1. CURL IS YOUR BEST FRIEND

You might think a dramatic curl is what causes transfer. But it is actually the opposite.

A tight, upward curl lifts the lash away from your eye and points it forward. It clears the hood. A straighter lash points down and gets trapped under your hood, causing transfer.

When you look for lashes, look for a strong, dramatic curl. The lash should point up, not out. This creates the illusion of a lifted eye.

2. PLACEMENT IS EVERYTHING

This is the technique that changed everything for me.

Do not place the lash directly on your natural lash line. Place it slightly above, on the skin of your eyelid. This is the "lifted" placement.

Here is the exact method:

  1. Look straight ahead in a mirror.
  2. Place the lash on your natural lash line first.
  3. Now, using your finger, gently push the lash upward by 1-2 millimeters. You want it to sit on the skin just above your lashes.
  4. Press and hold for 15 seconds.

This placement does two things. It opens up your eye by creating an artificial crease. And it prevents the lash from rubbing against your hood because it is positioned above the fold.

3. THE RIGHT STYLE

Not all lashes work for hooded eyes. Avoid styles that are longest in the center. Center-length lashes push the eye downward and emphasize the hood.

Choose a style that is longest at the outer corner. This is the cat-eye or winged style. It pulls the eye upward and outward, counteracting the downward pull of the hood.

Also, check the band. A thin, flexible band is essential. Thick bands are stiff and will not conform to the curve of your hooded eye. They will gap and pop off.

THE COMPLETE APPLICATION ROUTINE

Here is my 5-minute routine for hooded eyes.

  1. Curl your natural lashes first. This gives the falsies something to blend with.
  2. Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the lash band. Let it dry for 30 seconds until tacky.
  3. Place the lash slightly above your natural lash line. Use the placement technique above.
  4. Press down firmly for 15 seconds. Make sure the entire band is adhered.
  5. Use your finger to gently press the lash and your natural lashes together. This fuses them.

If you still experience transfer, use a clear lash sealant on top. This creates a waterproof barrier.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LASH FOR HOODED EYES

Let me summarize the buying criteria so you can shop with confidence.

  • Strong curl: The lash must point upward.
  • Outer-corner length: This lifts the eye.
  • Thin, flexible band: Conforms to your eye shape.
  • Lightweight: Heavy lashes pull the hood down.

If you check these boxes, you will not experience transfer. You will feel the lash stay in place all day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do my lashes keep transferring onto my eyelid?

Transfer happens when the lash rubs against the skin above your crease. This is caused by a lash that is too straight or placed too low. Use a lash with a strong curl and place it slightly above your natural lash line.

Should I use short or long lashes for hooded eyes?

Long lashes on the outer corner are ideal. Avoid long lashes in the center. Center length pushes the eye down.

Can I wear dramatic lashes with hooded eyes?

Yes. You just need the right shape. A dramatic cat-eye or winged style works beautifully. Avoid dense, center-heavy volume.

How do I keep the lash from popping off?

Ensure you are placing it above your natural lash line and pressing firmly for 15 seconds. A flexible band also helps it stay put.

THE LIFTED EYE EFFECT

When you get this right, the transformation is remarkable. Your eyes look instantly lifted. The hood seems to disappear. You look more awake, more alert, and more confident.

You no longer have to avoid lashes. You no longer have to worry about smudges at 3 PM. You just put them on and forget about them.
