Are False Lashes Appropriate for a Job Interview?

A job interview is the last place you want your makeup to be the conversation. But you also want to look polished, confident, and pulled together. So are false lashes appropriate?

The honest answer: yes, but only if they pass the "flight attendant" test — someone should notice you look groomed before they notice your lashes.

In my years of beauty journalism, I've interviewed more than 30 hiring managers across finance, tech, retail, and healthcare. Almost none of them care about "obvious" false lashes. What they care about is whether lashes look intentional. A false lash that mimics a natural lash fan is perceived as grooming. A huge winged style is perceived as a choice.

Research on first impressions shows that face processing takes under 500 milliseconds. That means your interviewer will know how they feel about your look before you sit down. Natural-looking lashes support a competent, honest first impression.

WHAT HIRING MANAGERS ACTUALLY NOTICE (AND WHAT THEY DON'T)

I asked a group of recruiters to list the first three things they notice about a candidate. Their answers: eye contact, smile, and nervous habits. No one said lashes. But when I showed them side-by-side photos of the same face with different lash styles, they consistently rated the natural lash as the most "trustworthy" and the cat-eye as the most "confident." The trust gap disappears if lashes are wispy and close to the natural lash line.

The real danger isn't wearing lashes. It's wearing ones that flake, lift, or irritate your eyes during the interview. If you're touching your eye, you look distracted.

THE 3 LASH STYLES TO SKIP BEFORE A JOB INTERVIEW

Dramatic cat-eye: It elongates your eye, but it also signals "bold." Unless you're interviewing to be an edgy content creator, skip it.
Heavy volume: Dense, thick lashes can make you look like you have heavy eyelids. They also take longer to remove, which doesn't help if you have back-to-back meetings.
Bottom lashes or rhinestone accents: Real talk: anything that catches the light is a distraction.

HOW TO MAKE LASHES LOOK INVISIBLE IN A VIDEO INTERVIEW

On camera, natural lashes can disappear. A demi-wispy lash reads as "awake" not "made up." Avoid very thin strips that don't have enough texture — they can look like a dark line above your eye. Test your setup 15 minutes early. Connect with eye contact, not in a mirror, and check whether your office lighting casts a shadow over your eye.
