It’s the day between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and your friend just posted a flash photo with silver strands woven into her lashes. You need to know: that’s NYE lash tinsel, and it’s easier than it looks.

WHAT IS NYE LASH TINSEL, EXACTLY?

Lash tinsel is a metallic fiber that’s woven between your natural lashes or a strip lash. Unlike loose glitter, it doesn’t fall into your eye. A typical party set uses 10 to 20 strands per eye. It reflects light because each strand is a flat, mirror-like surface. It’s not permanent — it lasts for one or two nights if you’re careful.

WHY IT WORKS FOR NEW YEAR’S

In low light, a metallic strand catches more attention than any shimmer shadow because its reflective surface is angled directly outward. On a dance floor, each blink is a white flash. HOW TO APPLY IN 7 MINUTES

Start with a clean strip lash. Lay it flat. Dab a small amount of lash adhesive onto a plastic lid and wait 15 seconds. Grab a tinsel strand with tweezers and dip only the tip into the adhesive. Press it onto the underside of the lash, about 2–3 mm from the base. Alternate silver and gold every three lashes. Wait 60 seconds until the tinsel is fixed. Then apply the lash to your lash line as normal.

HOW TO REMOVE IT WITHOUT DAMAGE

Please don’t pull. Soak a cotton pad in oil-based makeup remover and press it against your closed eye for 20 seconds. Slide the pad outward and the tinsel will release. If you used strip lashes, remove the lash first, then gently peel the tinsel strands off the band.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TINSEL LASH SET

First, the tinsel should have a fine, flat edge — craft tinsel is too thick and will poke the lid. Second, the strand length should be about 5–6 cm, no longer. Third, look for pre-made tinsel sets on a thin lash band, because attaching tinsel to a band is the messiest part.
