HOW TO STYLE TAPERED LASHES FOR EVERYDAY GLAM
You don’t need a makeup artist to get that “my lashes but better” look. And you can get it without a heavy, obvious strip. The trick is knowing how to style tapered lashes the right way. I’ve tried every lash style in my decade as a beauty editor, and tapered lashes are the closest thing to a cheat code for everyday glam. Here’s the exact routine I use — no experience required.
WHAT TAPERED LASHES DO DIFFERENTLY
Most strip lashes are cut blunt at the end, which is why they look fake and heavy. Tapered lashes are crafted with gradually thinning fibers, so they blend with your natural lashes instead of sitting on top of them. The result? A soft, feathered line that catches light naturally. Tapered lashes feel weightless from the first second because there’s no thick strip tugging at your eyelid.
THE 5-STEP STYLING ROUTINE
- Curl your natural lashes first. This is the step everyone skips. A 10-second clamp with a lash curler lifts your own lashes so they meet the falsie halfway. No gaps, no weird double-line.
- Measure and trim from the outer edge. Hold the lash over your lash line. It should start a few millimetres from your inner corner and end before your natural lash line. Trim the outer end — never the inner end — in tiny 1mm snips.
- Apply adhesive and wait 30 seconds. A thin, even line is enough. Waiting turns the adhesive tacky, which is the difference between sliding around and grabbing instantly.
- Place the center first. Starting at the outer corner is a mistake. Press the middle of the band onto your lash line, then the inner corner, then the outer edge. This gives you total control and prevents the “wing” lift.
- Squeeze your lashes together for 10 seconds. Use your thumb and index finger to gently pinch your natural lashes and the tapered lash into one unified line. That little squeeze is what creates the seamless, I-woke-up-like-this look.
COMMON MISTAKES THAT MAKE TAPERED LASHES LOOK WRONG
- Placing the lash too far above your lash line — it floats, and everyone notices.
- Skipping the curl step, which makes the lash look costume-y.
- Using too much adhesive, causing a stiff base.
- Not trimming, so the outer edge stabs your eyelid.
I was like you but worse. My first pair of tapered lashes went on crooked, and I walked through brunch with one eye looking surprised. Once you learn these steps, you’ll nail it in under 10 minutes.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TAPERED LASH
Here’s the truth from testing hundreds of lashes: the style matters less than the construction. Look for a tapered tip that’s not just a dyed edge — the fiber itself should get thinner. Check the band: it should be flexible enough to bend into a rainbow without snapping. And the weight matters. A great tapered lash feels like something you forget you’re wearing, not something you feel with every blink.
Can I reuse tapered lashes?
Yes. If you remove them gently and clean the band with oil-free remover, a high-quality tapered lash can be reused 10–15 times.
Do I have to use mascara with them?
No. Usually you don’t need mascara because the tapered fibers create their own depth. I recommend curling your natural lashes without mascara to avoid clumping.
Are tapered lashes good for hooded eyes?
Absolutely. The thinner tips mean less drag, so they stay lifted on hooded eyes without feeling heavy.
THE TAPERED LASH I KEEP COMING BACK TO
If you want the “average person asks if you got lash extensions” reaction without the appointment, PHANSTA makes the cleanest tapered lash I’ve tested. The band is 0.3mm, the fibers taper at both ends, and they withstand a full day without needing a touch-up.
