Downturned Eye Lash Application: Tips and Tricks
WHY DOWNTOWN LASHES FIGHT YOU
If your lashes point downward at the corners, you know how hard it is to make a pair of false lashes look right. The outer corner always seems to droop, the inner corner lifts away, and suddenly your eye looks heavier. It's not you. It's the technique most tutorials use—they're designed for almond-shaped eyes. Downturned eyes need a different angle, and the right lash shape, to actually lift your face.
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz and we'll match you with the perfect lash style for your unique eye shape — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →In the past, I would spend 20 minutes just to get lashes to stick, only to have them feel heavy and look wrong. I almost gave up. But then I learned a few tricks that changed everything. I want to share those with you today, because beautiful, lifted lashes are absolutely possible—even without a professional appointment.
THE 5-STEP APPLICATION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
- Prep your lids like you mean it. Wipe your lids with a cotton swab dipped in oil-free makeup remover. That includes the lash line. This takes 2 minutes and makes the lash glue grab better.
- Trim the outer edge. For downturned eyes, cut the outer end of the lash slightly—about 1/8 inch. This stops the extra weight from pulling the corner down.
- Apply glue and wait 30 seconds. Give the glue time to get tacky. This is the biggest change I made. If the glue is wet, the lash slides around and droops.
- Place the lash from the middle, then push the corners. Start by putting the lash on the center of your natural lash line. Press the middle down, then adjust the inner corner, and finally the outer corner. Gently nudge the outer corner up with a clean finger. This gives that angled lift.
- Finish with mascara on your natural lashes. Use a light coat to blend your real lashes with the false ones. This makes everything look natural and keeps the lash from looking like it's sitting on top.
That's the whole process. It sounds simple, but each step solves a specific problem of a downturned eye.
WHAT I QUIT DOING AFTER MY FIRST LASH EXTENSION APPOINTMENT
I wanted to love lash extensions, but after my first appointment, the technician told me that my natural lashes point down, so the extensions would need extra curl. She prescribed a particular curl type, but the extensions cost $120 and only lasted two weeks before they started pointing downward. I learned a few things that day:
- Don't buy lashes with too much length. Long, heavy lashes drag your corner down faster than anything.
- Avoid intense cat-eye shapes. While they look pretty on models, on a downturned eye they emphasize the droop.
- Use lash glue with a brush. Getting a precise line is easier than using a tube. But more importantly, apply glue only near the center, so the outer corner isn't glued down too far.
- Press your lashes up for 10 seconds after placement. The bond needs time to firm. If you blink too fast, your lid muscle pulls it back down.
Once I made these changes, my lashes stayed put for 8+ hours without sagging. I was shocked at the difference.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LASH STYLE FOR DOWNWARD SLOPING EYES
Now you understand the application tips. But the lash shape itself matters just as much. Here's a quick cheat sheet:
- Curl: Choose lashes with a strong curl (like D or C curl). They mimic an open, lifted look.
- Length: Stay between 8mm and 12mm. Longer lengths look heavy on a downturned eye.
- Style: Opt for winged or wispy styles that taper outward, not cat-eye styles with heavy outer corners.
- Band: Look for a thin, flexible band that can follow your eye shape without pulling the corner.
If you have all of these, you're ready for a lifted look. No appointment required.
MY HONEST REVEAL: WHAT I USE NOW
I know this is the part where I tell you about the product I've been using. I'm a beauty editor, not a salesperson, so I'll keep it real: I tested dozens of lash brands, and PHANSTA LASHES was the first one that truly fit my downturned eyes. Their lashes have a thin band and a strong curl, and they come in wispy styles that lift without the weight. I've been wearing them for 6 months, and I don't plan to switch.
If you want to try them for yourself, here's the link to their lash collection. They have a how-to video too, but honestly, the tips above are all you need.
