How to Keep Lashes Lifting in Tropical Humidity

how to keep lashes lifting in tropical humidity

The island humidity did not care about my best lashes. I arrived in Manila with a pair that had looked flawless in Auckland's dry air. Six hours later, they looked like broken umbrellas. If you live in the tropics, or you travel there, you know exactly how this feels: you carefully curl, apply, and check the mirror, and by the time you walk out the door, the outer corners have already begun to sink.

THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT HUMIDITY AND LASH ADHESION

Humidity is not visible water droplets, it's vapor. Vapor gets into every fiber around your eye and adds weight. When a lash fiber absorbs vapor, it expands and loses the memory of its original curl. All lashes do this, but at different speeds. The band also absorbs vapor, and a swollen band changes shape, which makes the lash slide or lift away from your lash line. That is why the corner drops first: the outer edge is the furthest point from the strongest adhesive bond.

ALSO: THE OIL-SUNSCREEN DOUBLE TROUBLE

The tropics come with sunscreen. Most sunscreens contain oil. Oil breaks down the lash adhesive bond, the lash loses its grip. And since you are likely touching up with a damp finger or a setting spray, you are adding moisture to the whole cycle. It is not one issue, it is three problems happening at once: vapor in the fibers, oil on the bond, and added moisture from your touch-ups.

WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS IN A TROPICAL CLIMATE

These five techniques have survived my tests in Singapore, Bali, and São Paulo:

  • Prime your natural lashes first. A thin layer of dry lash primer gives the false lash grip, so it doesn't slide on top of skin oil.
  • Use a heated curler on the false lash, not a clamp. Heat shapes the fiber; a clamp just creates a kink. Hold the fiber against the curler for 15 seconds, let it cool, then apply.
  • Crunch your natural and false lashes together with a mascara brush after applying. This bonds them into one unit, so the outer edge moves as one.
  • Choose synthetic fibers in tropical climates. PBT fiber does not absorb vapor. Natural hair does.
  • Carry a twist-up lash primer in your bag, not a curler. A wet finger on a primer will re-drop the curl. A brush lets you re-coat without adding water.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR BEFORE YOU PACK YOUR LASHES

Ask three questions. Can the band dry quickly? Is the fiber synthetic? Does the curl bounce back after you bend it? If you bend the band and it springs back, that is a good sign. If it stays bent, it will not survive even a light tropical afternoon.

THE BRAND THAT PASSED MY HUMIDITY CHALLENGE

I ran a two-week humidity challenge on seven lash brands, and PHANSTA LASHES was the only one where the curl stayed from 7am to 10pm in 86% humidity. The band snapped back, the fibers stayed upright, and not a single outer corner dropped. I actually called my sister in Kuala Lumpur and told her to try them—she is the skeptical one, and she now refuses to travel without them. That is the outcome you want: a lash that stays lifted all day without you thinking about it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will any false lashes survive high humidity?

Yes, if they use synthetic fiber with a water-resistant band. Natural hair lashes will lose their structure.

Can I wear false lashes in the rain?

Yes, if you use a waterproof bond and allow the lash to dry completely before going out.

How do I prep my natural lashes before applying in humid weather?

Clean them with micellar water, dry them completely, then apply a dry lash primer. Avoid moisturizer on the eyelids immediately before application.
