I have a confession: I’ve ruthlessly destroyed a $25 pair of lashes because I threw them into a makeup bag and closed the zipper. When I opened the bag at the shoot, the lash looked like a crumpled napkin. I learned something that day—packing lashes without crushing them is a skill. And it’s not that hard.

THE THREE WAYS LASHES GET CRUSHED

1. Bouncing around loose in a makeup bag. 2. Being folded in half “to save space.” 3. Getting pressed under a heavy bottle. These three mistakes account for 90% of the “my lashes are ruined” messages in my inbox. The good news? All three are preventable.

WHAT CRUSHING ACTUALLY DOES TO A LASH

Crushing flattens the curl and spreads the individual fibers into awkward clumps. It also creases the band, which ruins the way the lash follows your eye shape. You can’t un-crease a stiff lash band. You can flatten the lash with paper towels, but the curl loses her spirit.

THE SUPPLIES THAT KEEP LASHES INTACT

Use a hard-shell travel case (a compact mirror case works), a clean piece of tissue, and a padded divider. An old empty aspirin tin is honestly one of my favorite lash carriers. The rigid sides create a protective envelope. If you don’t have a hard case, use a paper cup and fold the lashes around it.

STEP-BY-STEP: THE TWENTY-SECOND PACKING ROUTINE

1. Place the lash in its original tray if you still have it. 2. Put a small piece of tissue under the lash to absorb moisture. 3. Close the tray and tape the ends shut with an inch of washi tape. 4. Put the tray in a dedicated mesh pocket—do not bury it. 5. If the original tray is gone, wrap the lash around a clean straw and secure it with a soft hair tie. This preserves the curl.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Never fold a lash band in half. Never toss it into a clear ziplock with liquid bottles. And never pack a lash in the front zipper of a backpack where pressure points get pushed from every direction. One single heavy book on top of a makeup bag is all it takes to make a lash curl look wavy.

THE 30-SECOND HOTEL RESCUE

If your lash still got crushed, don’t panic. Here’s how to fix it: Dampen a q-tip with a little warm water and gently run it along the back of the band. Then wrap the lash around your finger, plastic side facing in, and secure with a clip. Leave it for 10 minutes. This resets the curl for at least a few hours. Not perfect, but enough to save your evening.

All of this matters because a false lash is a piece of architecture. It’s designed to bend in set places and hold a specific arc. Treat it like the fragile extension of your eye that it is.
