How to Apply False Lashes Like a Pro in 10 Simple Steps
Let me tell you about the first time I wore false lashes. It was for a prom, and I used the thickest, stiffest pair I could find. I put them on at 6pm. By the time we got to the venue, one side had flipped up and the other was tugging at my lid. I spent the evening in the bathroom fighting with a mascara wand and a pocket mirror. I almost swore off lashes forever.
That's why I'm so excited to share this 10-step method. It took me over a decade of trying and failing, but you can skip all of it. Once you follow these steps, you'll be able to apply any lash in under five minutes—with zero poking, zero lifting, and zero “why is it upside down?” moments.
THE 10-STEP APPLICATION BREAKDOWN
Step 1: Measure and trim. Hold the lash against your eye without glue. Trim from the outer edge, never the inner corner. It should run from your inner lash line to about 2mm before your outer corner.
Step 2: Rough up the band. Gently bend the band back and forth a few times. This softens it so it curves with your eye, not against it.
Step 3: Test the fit again. Even if you measured once, re-fit after bending. Sometimes the band curls inward more than you expected.
Step 4: Apply a thin layer of glue. Use a fine tip brush or the tube with a wand. Run the glue along the entire band, then wait 20 seconds until it's tacky. This is the most common mistake—applying before tacky is a recipe for sliding.
Step 5: Blot the glue. Some pros like to lightly dab the band with a fingertip to remove excess. This gives you a smoother fit and less glue residue on your lid.
Step 6: Rest the lash on your hand. Place your index finger under the center of the lash and your thumb at the outer corner. Holding it at the ends makes it twist.
Step 7: Press the center of the lash to your lash line. Look slightly downward and bring the lash down onto your natural lashes, starting from the middle. This gives you a reference point.
Step 8: Secure the inner corner. Now press the inner corner down with a pair of tweezers or your fingertip. Then, after that, gently push the outer corner down.
Step 9: Blend with mascara. One or two coats of a lightweight mascara are enough to fuse your real lashes with the false ones. Avoid heavy mascaras that will clump the false fibers.
Step 10: Never pull—press down. If you feel a spot lifting later, don't pull. Use your finger to press the whole band down while you hold your eye half-closed. The warmth helps reactivate the glue.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN EASY-TO-APPLY LASHES
The technique matters, but the lash design does 50% of the work. Over the years I've found three specs that make applying lashes almost too easy:
- A thin, soft band (0.10mm or less) — bends easily and hides without texture.
- Lightweight fibers — they don't push your natural lash line down during placement.
- An inner-corner taper — it sits naturally and doesn't stab your inner eye.
When you combine those three with the 10-step method, your lashes stay put whether it's a Tuesday workday or a 10-hour wedding party.
TIME TO PRACTICE WITH THE RIGHT PAIR
Now that you've got the method, grab a pair that won't fight you. A soft band, tapered edges, and featherlight construction will turn a frustrating ritual into a five-second flutter. And remember—practice isn't about drawing the perfect wing. It's about muscle memory.
Why do my false lashes pop up in the inner corner?
That's usually from too much glue or from trimming the inner corner too short. Trim from the outside, apply a thin coat, and press the inner corner down before the glue fully dries.
How long do false lashes take to apply once you're practiced?
With a comfortable lash and the steps above, most people get down to 3-4 minutes. During your first attempts, allow 10–15 minutes without stress.
Is it better to use tweezers or my fingers?
Fingers give better control for pressing, tweezers for precise corner placement. Use both: tweezers for positioning, fingers for pressing.
