WHY LASHES USUALLY COME OFF IN WATER (AND HOW TO PREVENT IT)

Most lash adhesives are not waterproof—they are water-resistant. What that means is they can handle a splash of rain or a tear at a wedding, but a full underwater submersion breaks down the bond. The lash glue creates a seal on the lash line. When the seal gets forced water, it loses stickiness.

Additionally, if you have recently applied a moisturizer or heavy concealer on the eye, the oils in those products can penetrate the band and cause it to slip. Diving deep puts pressure on the lids, pushing the lash off.

The simple trick? Press your lash line with a clean paper towel (never sar) to dry the band after you apply the glue and hold for 15 seconds. Then, wait 10 minutes before you hit the water. This gives the glue time to cure.

WHAT TYPE OF LASH HOLDS UP BEST IN THE POOL?

When planning for water, pick a lash that has a synthetic fiber that doesn't absorb water. Avoid natural hair lashes (mink or human hair) because they can frizz up when wet. Instead, opt for a synthetic fiber—polyester works great—and a clear flex band. The clear band isn't as porous as black latex, so it doesn't hold water against your skin.

• Go for curated texture: A lash with a base and spike structure is better than a dense volume. If the spikes fill with water, they’ll look droopy.
• Shorten them. A shorter length of 10-12mm style holds better than super-dramatic 15mm length. Less surface area means less water resistance.

HOW TO SAVE YOUR LASHES AFTER SWIMMING

Let’s say you take a dip. When you get out, do NOT just let them air-dry with towels if you have a lot of chlorine in the water. Chlorine can weaken the fibers. Instead, towel-press them gently, then use your finger to brush them back into shape. Use the curl of your finger to push the lash up so they don't look limp.

When you are finally done, remove them immediately. Do not sleep in them after a swim. The salts and chlorine will break down the band if left overnight. Pop them off, rinse with fresh water, and put them back in the case to dry. They will be as good as new.

THE PADDING POOL MOVE

Here is a secret I use personally: If you know you are going to be in water, add a tiny dot of a waterproof lash glue to the outer corners of the lash band. THe outer corner is the first thing to lift in water. Putting a little extra reinforcement there is like putting extra sealant on a tent. It keeps the whole structure intact.
