GATHER WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START

You don't need a professional kit. But you do need these basics:

• A pair of false lashes (thin band, lightweight fibers—great for beginners)
• Lash adhesive (if you're new, use a brush-on glue so you can control the amount)
• Tweezers, ideally angled
• Small clean scissors or beauty scissors
• A mirror at eye level (or slightly below)
• Cotton swabs and makeup remover for fixes

If your hands tend to shake, rest your elbow on a table and brace your tweezers hand against your cheek. This makes you much more stable.

STEP 1: MEASURE YOUR LASHES

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the reason lashes feel too long. Take the lash out of its tray and hold it over your eye without applying glue. It should fit along your lash line, starting around your inner corner and ending right at the outer edge of your eye. If it extends too far, now's the time to trim.

Cut from the outer edge slowly. Snip small bits at a time—you can always trim more, but you can't add hair back after you cut. A good rule: trim no more than 2mm in one go. If the inner corner pokes you, you can trim that side too, but make the inner corner shorter than the outer corner.

STEP 2: CURL YOUR NATURAL LASHES AND APPLY MASCARA

Use a lash curler first. Then coat your natural lashes with a thin layer of mascara. This sounds counterintuitive, but it creates a unified base. Your natural lashes will blend with the false lash, so the strip doesn't look separate. Let the mascara dry completely before you apply glue—if there's moisture on your lashes, the fake lash can slide.

If you have straight lashes that point downward, curling them first makes the biggest difference. The false lash can actually bond with your natural lash instead of floating above it.

STEP 3: APPLY a THIN LINE OF ADHESIVE

Run a thin line of glue along the entire length of the lash band. Wait 20–30 seconds. Don't rush this. You're waiting for the glue to become tacky. If you apply the lash while the glue is wet, it will slip all over your eye. When the glue is tacky, it grabs the skin immediately.

Pro trick: apply an extra tiny dot of glue onto each end of the band. The inner and outer corners are the first to lift, so they deserve a little more hold.

STEP 4: PLACE THE LASH AT THE CENTER OF YOUR EYE FIRST

Look straight into the mirror with your chin slightly lifted. Focus on the center of your lash line first. Place the center of the lash strip there, then press down with your fingers or tweezers for a few seconds. Working from the center outward prevents the lash from being shifted too far toward your nose.

Press the outer corner down and after that the inner. Make sure the lash is positioned right at the base of your natural lashes—not floating on your eyelid skin. If it rests on skin, it will feel heavy and might lift. If you struggle to see, try a magnifying mirror or use your phone's camera to zoom in.

If the lash is too close to your nose, gently nudge it with a cotton swab before the glue fully sets.

STEP 5: PINCH YOUR NATURAL LASHES AND THE FALSE LASH TOGETHER

Once the strip is in place, gently pinch your natural lashes and the false lash together with your fingertips. This blends them so there's no visible line where the fake lash starts. Use your index finger and thumb to lightly press the lengths together. You're not trying to make them match perfectly—just make them look like one set.

STEP 6: HIDE THE BAND WITH LINER (OR LEAVE IT)

If your lash band is dark, you can simply press it down and go. If you see any gaps, gently wiggle the lash band closer to your lash line. A thin line of liquid liner along the band hides the join. You only need to trace where the band sits—no need for a dramatic wing unless you want one.

If you prefer no liner, choose a lash with a transparent or invisible band. Transparent bands are forgiving for beginners because they don't look harsh if there's a tiny gap between the lash and your skin.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR LASHES WITHOUT DAMAGE

At the end of the day, soak a cotton pad in oil-based makeup remover or micellar water and press it gently against the lash band for about 20 seconds. The glue softens and the lash peels away easily. Never pull or yank.

After removing your lashes, clean the glue off the band with a pair of tweezers. Place them back into the tray and store your lashes in a cool dry place. With good care, a quality lash can be worn many times.
