Jess is a 29-year-old project manager with a 9am meeting and a 9pm event. She does her makeup at 6:30am. By 2pm the inner corners are lifting. She said, "I use a great lash glue, I wait for it to get tacky, but by the time I have my lunch salad, it's basically hanging off." When I asked her about her skincare routine, she told me she layers a heavy eye cream right before inserting her lashes. That was the problem.

WHY LASHES FALL: THE REAL CULPRITS

Here's what I learned from talking to lash artists for over a decade. The main reasons lashes come off are always the same:

1. Oil on the eyelid. Your skin produces oil constantly. If you apply lashes right after moisturizer or primer, the glue adheres to oil, not skin.
2. Using old glue. Most lash adhesives have a 3-month shelf life. Opened glue works for a couple of months, then loses its tack.
3. Applying the lash over a wet or damp lash line. The glue needs 20–30 seconds to become tacky. If it's still wet, it slides off.
4. Pressing for only 5 seconds. The adhesive takes about 15 seconds to bond. 5 seconds just isn't enough.
5. Pulling the lash off by the outer corner. That stretches the band and weakens its shape.

WHAT THE LASH ARTIST TOLD ME ABOUT 18-HOUR WEAR

During an interview for this page, lash artist Michelle (15 years in the game) told me: "The key is the band. A thick band is the enemy of long wear. When you put a thick band on a curved eye, it creates pressure points. The first time you blink, it lifts." She also recommends pressing the lash into place with your finger for 15 seconds after applying a layer of liquid liner. "The liner base locks the lash in." She told me, "Never skip the inner corner. That's the spot that falls off first, so add a tiny dot of extra glue there."

THE SIMPLE CHECKLIST FOR LONG-LASTING LASHES

Before you buy any lash, use this checklist:

• Clean, dry lids before applying.
• A flexible, thin band (under 0.2mm).
• A lash shape that matches your eye's curve, not a "one size fits all" curve.
• Fresh adhesive (less than 3 months old).
• A press of 15 seconds after sitting the lash.

If you can check all five, you won't be sending panic texts at dinner.

How long can I wear lashes for?

If you start with clean lids, a good lash, and fresh glue, many quality pairs stay in place for 12–18 hours. But that doesn't mean you should sleep in them. Every night, remove them to keep your natural lash follicles healthy.

Do more expensive lashes last longer?

Not necessarily. The brand isn't the deciding factor. The band and lash map are. A cheap lash with a thin, flexible band and a short inner section will outlast any premium lash with a hard band.
