Layered Lashes: The Secret to Voluminous Yet Wispy Sets

The first time I saw a truly layered lash look, I thought the lash artist had cheated. It was fluffy at the base, light at the ends, and somehow both full and wispy at the same time. WHAT ARE LAYERED LASHES, REALLY?

A layered lash is a combination of strips or individual clusters placed in a specific order: base layer for length, middle layer for fullness, top layer for a wispy finish. The magic is in the stagger. You do not place one strip directly on top of the other. You shift the top layer a few millimeters inward or outward so the ends separate, not stack. That separation is what makes a set look wispy rather than clumpy.

THE 5 LAYERING RULES I START WITH

• Use two to three strips maximum. More than that and you are attaching weight to your natural lashes, not building beauty.
• Curl each layer before you stick it on. Heat-set curls hold much better than flat ones.
• Place the first layer close to the lash line. Place the second layer 1-2mm higher but shift it toward the outer corner.
• Let the outer lash of the top layer extend past the outer corner by 2mm. That small overhang made the biggest difference in my client photos.
• Finish with a light coat of transfer-proof mascara only on the roots. Mascara on the ends welds the layers together and destroys the wispy effect.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LAYERED LASH SET

The truth is you need a lash set with at least two length points, a matte finish so the layers do not glare under lights, and a curl that survives the commute.
