Cat-Eye Lash Extension Map: Customize Without a Liner
You sit down to map a cat-eye lash extension set. You reach for the eyeliner pen — and realize you don't have one. Or worse, you've tried the “draw a wing on the skin” method, and the finished lashes looked nothing like the sketch.
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz and we'll match you with the perfect lash style for your unique eye shape — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →Here's the truth: eyeliner is a crutch. The eye itself already has everything you need to build a beautiful cat-eye map. You just have to know where to look.
WHY THE OLD “LINER MAP” METHOD FAILS
A liner-drawn wing is a flat, two-dimensional shape. Your eye is a curved, three-dimensional surface. When you map lashes to a drawn line, the spikes often land in the wrong position — too low, too far out, or pushing against the natural curl direction. That's why so many cat-eye sets look perfect on the mannequin head and strange on a real face.
Your eyes have their own natural markers: the pupil, the lash line, the outer corner, and the orbital bone. Those markers are all you need.
THE 4-STEP MAPPING PROCESS
Skip the liner and use this process instead:
- Mark the pupil's outer edge. Ask your client to look straight ahead. The outer edge of the iris is your peak point. That's where the longest fans will go.
- Divide the lash line into three zones. Inner (5–7 mm), middle (8–10 mm), outer (11–13 mm). Your peak sits in the middle zone, not the outer zone.
- Place the first few spikes at the peak. Build outward from there. This keeps the transition smooth, with no sudden cliff of length.
- Taper the outer corner to 4–6 mm shorter than the peak. This creates that “flyaway” cat-eye lift without dragging the eye down.
That's it. No liner. Just a thoughtful build around the actual shape of the eye.
HOW TO ADJUST THE MAP FOR YOUR EYE SHAPE
Your map should flex based on the eye in front of you:
- Round eyes: Lower the peak by 1–2 mm so the map feels grounded instead of over-the-top.
- Almond eyes: Keep the peak exactly at the pupil edge — the natural shape already supports the cat-eye angle.
- Deep-set eyes: Shorten the outer corner by 2–3 mm so the lashes don't bump against the brow bone.
A client of mine with round eyes said, “I've had cat-eye sets before and they made my eyes look smaller. This map actually opened them up.” That's the difference placement makes.
WHAT MAKES A MAP ACTUALLY WORK
Three things separate a good cat-eye map from a mediocre one: symmetry, transition, and curl.
- Symmetry: The peak length should match on both eyes, even if the natural eyes are slightly different.
- Transition: Length should change gradually, not abruptly, from inner to outer.
- Curl: Use a D or DD curl on the outer half to get that signature lift.
And if all of this feels like a lot of precision work — it is. That's why I designed the PHANSTA LASHES cat-eye styles to follow the same logic: peak at the pupil, taper at the corner, curl doing the heavy lifting. We did the mapping math for you, so all you have to do is apply and go. The result is the same lifted, cheeky expression — without drawing a single line.

FAQ
Do I need mapping tape to create a cat-eye lash map?
No. Mapping tape keeps lashes separated while you work, but you can build the map without it. The 4-step method above works with just your tweezers and the natural markers on the eye.
What lengths should I use for a cat-eye map?
Start with 8 mm at the inner corner, 12–13 mm at the peak, and 9 mm at the outer corner. Adjust up or down based on the client's eye size and comfort level.
Can I use the same map for strip lashes?
Yes. Strip lashes with wider flares toward the middle and a gentle taper at the corner replicate the same balanced cat-eye shape.
