WHY DO MY LASHES HURT? FIXING DISCOMFORT
If you've ever taken off your false lashes and felt relief, you're not crazy. False lashes shouldn't hurt. But three out of five people we surveyed said they've experienced some kind of discomfort within the first hour of wear. If your lashes are pulling, pinching, or throbbing, something is wrong. Here's how to fix it in less than three minutes.
THE REAL REASONS YOUR LASHES HURT
The #1 cause of false lash pain is the band. A too-stiff band doesn't conform to your lash line — it presses against it. The #2 cause is placement. When the lash sits slightly above your natural lash line, it rubs against the skin every time you blink. The #3 cause is the weight of the lashes themselves. Heavy lashes pull on your real lashes, and the strain can cause a dull ache that only gets worse after a few hours.
But there's a less obvious cause: the adhesive. Many lash glues contain latex, which can cause a mild allergic reaction on the eyelid. If you feel a burning sensation or your eyes water within 10 minutes, that's likely a latex sensitivity. Switching to a latex-free adhesive is the obvious fix — but you can also try a different style of lash band that doesn't require as much glue.
3 COMMON LASH MISTAKES YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW YOU'RE MAKING
- Placing the lash too far from the natural lash line. When you're rushing, it's tempting to slap the lash on a little high. But that gap means the band is sitting on your eyelid skin, not your lashes. It will rub and sting every time you blink. Fix: look down and press the band as close to your natural lashes as possible.
- Cutting the lash too short. If you cut a lash strip shorter than your eye, it can pull toward the middle and dig into the inner corner. Leave at least 2-3 millimeters on each side to anchor it properly.
- Reusing old lashes with residue glue on the band. Dried glue leaves bumps that irritate the lash line. That's why your lashes might have felt fine the first time, but hurt on the second wear.
Making these small corrections instantly changes how lashes feel. You should forget you're wearing them after five minutes — if you don't, something is wrong.
THE QUICK FIX CHECKLIST
When your lashes start to hurt, use this checklist before you immediately remove them:
- Look in a mirror. Is the lash band hugging your lash line? If not, remove and reapply.
- Does your eye look red or irritated? If yes, remove the lash. It's not worth it.
- Is the pain a dull pressure, not a sharp sting? Try pressing the band gently for 10 seconds — sometimes the band just needs to settle.
- Does it still hurt after 10 minutes? Remove. The lash style is likely too heavy for your natural lashes.
Once you know what causes lash pain, you can stop repeating the same mistakes. Your goal should be to wear lashes that feel like air — no tugging, no pinching, no counting hours until you can rip them off.
