Myth: Waterproof Lashes Are Waterproof Forever
You bought waterproof lashes because you wanted to wear them in the lake, to your cousin's beach wedding, or through a long cry at a movie. It's time to set the record straight: waterproof doesn't mean eternal. Once you know how to treat them, you can enjoy them without constantly checking a mirror.
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz and we'll match you with the perfect lash style for your unique eye shape — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →You've probably tried a pair, and a few wears later, they've started to curl upward at the tips or the band has turned sticky. What happened? Did you get a defective pair?
Not exactly. You ran into the myth that 'waterproof' means 'indestructible.' It doesn't. And once you understand why, you can get far more out of a pair of waterproof lashes.
WHY 'WATERPROOF LASHES' IS A MISTRANSLATED TERM
When a lash is labeled waterproof, it usually means the lash fibers themselves are made from synthetic materials that don't soak up water. The most common material is PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), a plastic, which is basically what every standard false lash is made of. So even regular lashes are technically waterproof. What the label really tries to say is that the lash will hold its curl and shape when wet. That's true — but only for a while.
The problem lies in the other parts of the lash: the band and the curl retention. Your lash band is often made from cotton or nylon thread. Over time, water, sweat, and cleansers break that thread down. Once the band weakens, the entire lash loses its shape.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS TO WATERPROOF LASHES IN WATER
- First few wears: You're in the pool, you come out, and they still look perfect. The fibers shed water.
- After 5-10 wears: The band starts to feel slightly stiff. It's not visible, but it's the beginning of the breakdown.
- After 15-20 wears: The lash loses its snap. The band may begin to lift at the inner corner.
- After 20-30 wears: The curl becomes less defined. The lash fibers may start to splay or separate.
The truth is no false lash should be treated as a permanent item. Even high-end reusable lashes have a lifecycle. Think of them like a swimsuit: you wouldn't expect one suit to look brand new after three summers straight.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR WATERPROOF LASHES LAST (THE 3-MONTH RULE)
If you want to get the most out of any lash — waterproof or not — follow these rules:
- Don't sleep in them. A 2022 survey of 400 false-lash users found that the biggest factor in lasting lashes is removing them at night. Even waterproof styles can break down from friction on a pillow.
- Cleanse without soaking. Use a cotton pad soaked in oil-free cleanser (or micellar water) and press it onto the lash for 15 seconds. Never soak them in a bowl of water. That waterlogged band is what kills the shape.
- Dry them face up, not squished. Lay the lashes on a clean towel or their original tray, letting the band air dry completely before storing. A damp band is a bacteria magnet.
- Replace them after about 30 wears. If you wear the same pair three nights a week to commute, that's about 10-12 weeks. After that, the fibers lose their memory, and no amount of cleaning brings them back.
WATERPROOF VS REGULAR LASHES: WHAT THE LABELS ACTUALLY TELL YOU
| Lash type | Best for | Average lifespan | Care level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard synthetic lash | Daily wear, events | 10-15 wears | Gentle cleansing |
| Waterproof lash | Beaches, pools, tears | 20-30 wears | Extra careful with band |
| Silk or mink-style lash | Luxury look | 15-20 wears | Very delicate |
Now you know what waterproof can and can't do. The next step is caring for your lashes in a way that matches your reality. If you're someone who swims in the ocean and still wants to look decent for dinner, you need a lash that can handle moisture while still sitting comfortably on your eye. That means a flexible band that doesn't undulate at the first splash.
At PHANSTA LASHES, we test our bands to make sure they hold shape through wet conditions. Our most popular waterproof styles are designed to be worn up to 30 times, as long as you follow the care steps above. No need to treat them like they're made of paper.
