Lash Primers: Necessary or Not?
My friend Ana will not put on lashes without her primer anymore. She told me, “I don’t even remember the days before primer. My lashes just hold better.” Meanwhile, another reader said, “I bought a lash primer because of TikTok and honestly? I saw zero difference.”
NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR EYE SHAPE?
Take our 60-second quiz to find your perfect lash match — no glue, no commitment.
TAKE THE QUIZ →So who is right? As someone who has tested more lash products than I can count, I can tell you the truth is somewhere in the middle. And it starts with understanding what a primer actually is.
STEP BACK: WHAT A LASH PRIMER EVEN IS
A lash primer is a preparation product applied to your lashes (or the skin right under your lashes) before you apply your main lash. Different brands use different formulas, but most do two things: remove oils and condition the lashes.
Think of it like face primer. It preps the skin so your makeup adheres longer.
WHERE A PRIMER LEGITIMATELY HELPS
There are a few situations where a lash primer is not a gimmick:
- Oily eyelids: If your lash corners lift within a few hours, natural skin oil may be breaking down your lash adhesive before it dries. A primer can remove surface oils and give the bond something to hold.
- Watery eyes: Periodic moisture under the lash line undermines adhesive. A primer adds a layer that reduces the chance of the bond sliding.
- Rough or dry natural lashes: If your lashes feel coarse or brittle, a conditioning primer can smooth them so the lash band sits snugly.
WHERE A PRIMER IS JUST AN UPSELL
Here’s the part the internet doesn’t say: most well-formulated lash bonds work perfectly without a primer. The small amount of natural oil you produce is not destroying your lashes. If you have never had persistent corner-lifts or fall-offs, adding a primer will not give you a dramatic difference.
“Primer stacks” become a problem when they turn a 5-minute lash routine into a 3-step ritual. The more products you introduce around your eyes, the more chances for irritation, allergic reactions, and messy buildup.
THE 3-QUESTION “DO YOU NEED IT” TEST
- Do your lashes lift or fall off within 4 hours? If yes, read on. If no, skip the primer.
- Do you have visibly oily eyelids? Run a blotting paper over your lid mid-afternoon. If there’s oil, a primer might help.
- Is your lash adhesive over 6 months old? Then the problem is probably your adhesive, not your lashes. Replace it before buying a primer.
If all three point to “yes,” buy a primer. If they point to “no,” save your money and your time.
HOW TO USE A PRIMER THE RIGHT WAY (IF YOU TRY IT)
- Apply primer only to the lash area after you moisturize and let your skin dry.
- Wait 30–60 seconds for it to become tacky.
- Apply your lash adhesive over the primer, then place your lashes.
- Press gently and hold for 20 seconds. That’s it.
LASH PRIMER QUESTIONS, SETTLED
Is a lash primer the same as an eyelash conditioner?
Not exactly. A primer is meant to prep for applications. A conditioner nourishes lashes over time. Some products do both, but you don’t need both in one routine.
Can I use regular eye primer on my lashes?
Avoid eye shadow primers under your lash adhesive. They are formulated with different polymers and can make false lashes slide or clump.
What’s better: a primer or a better lash adhesive?
If your adhesive is old, upgrade it first. Adhesive quality affects wear time more than any primer ever will.
