The Environmental Impact of False Lashes

the environmental impact of false lashes

Every pair of false lashes you toss after a night out will sit in a landfill for over 500 years. That's not drama — that's chemistry. Most lashes are made from plastic-based fibres that don't break down, and the ones that do come with packaging that makes it worse.

I spent a week researching the environmental cost of my own lash drawer before writing this. The goal isn't to guilt you into throwing away your lashes. It's to help you make smarter choices so you can love the look without hating the footprint.

THE PROBLEM WITH YOUR PRETTY LASH HABIT

Here's the thing: it's not just the lashes. It's the entire cycle. Every pair arrives in a plastic blister pack, wrapped in a cardboard sleeve, shipped in a box. That's about 35 grams of plastic per pair. Multiplied by the millions of pairs sold every year, we're talking about thousands of tons of plastic waste annually — just from lashes.

And the lashes themselves? Standard synthetic lashes are made from polyester or PVC. They're designed to be disposable, but the plastic will outlive you by centuries. The average user tosses a pair after 2-3 wears without thinking about it.

I was exactly this person. My lash drawer had 40 pairs, most of which I wore once. Calling them 'disposable' felt like a licence to waste.

WHAT YOUR LASHES ARE ACTUALLY MADE OF (AND WHY IT MATTERS)

  • Polyester/PVC (synthetic) — the most common. Cheap, glossy, and looks real. Breaks down into microplastics over hundreds of years.
  • PBT plastic — a polymer used in higher-end falsies. More durable, so you can wear them 20+ times if you care for them properly.
  • Real silk — biodegradable and light, but expensive. The greenest option if you're willing to invest.
  • Mink fur — marketed as natural, but the reality is grim. It's unethical, and the fur often makes allergies worse.
  • Plant-based biopolymers — a newer category. They decompose faster and are designed to be sustainable, though availability is still limited.

HOW TO SHOP FOR LASHES WITHOUT THE GUILT

  • Buy one high-quality pair instead of five cheap ones. One pair worn 20 times beats twenty pairs worn once.
  • Reuse — but sanitize and store properly. Clean lashes with oil-free remover after each wear, and they could last for months.
  • Check the band. If it's cotton, water and sweat ruin it fast. A plastic or polymer band survives more wears.
  • Recycle the packaging. Look for brands that use aluminium tins or paper cartons that can actually be recycled.

COMPARING LASH MATERIALS AT A GLANCE

Material Biodegradable? Wears per pair Eco-rating
Polyester/PVC No (microplastics) 2-5 Low
PBT polymer No, but durable 15-25 Medium
Real silk Yes 10-15 High
Mink fur Partially 20+ if cared for Very low (ethical)
Plant biopolymers Yes 5-10 High

QUICK FAQ

Are any false lashes truly biodegradable?

Yes. Real silk lashes and plant-based biopolymers will decompose eventually. But they also wear out faster, so you need to balance eco-friendliness with how often you're rebuying.

Can you recycle lash packaging?

It depends on the brand. Cardboard sleeves and aluminium tins are recyclable. Plastic blister packs usually aren't. Check with your local recycling rules and look for brands that use paper or metal packaging.

Is mink actually better for the planet?

No. Mink fur comes from animals raised on fur farms, and the animal welfare issues are severe. Plus mink lashes are often coated in plastic. Silk is the more ethical and biodegradable option.

How many wears per pair is realistic?

A high-quality pair with a polymer band can last 15-25 wears if you clean them properly. That's the difference between buying one pair a month versus one pair every six months.
