HOW TO MAKE FALSE LASHES WEAR LONGER
You found the perfect pair of falsies. Maybe you paid $15, maybe you got them in a kit. And after three weeks of gentle wear, they look like they've been through a tornado. I get it — I've been there. But here's the truth: most lashes don't die. They're just stored wrong, cleaned in a rush, or yanked off like a bad band-aid.
Here's how to make false lashes wear longer — sometimes up to 30 wears instead of 10 — with a few habits that take less than two minutes a day.
WHY YOUR LASHES LOOK 'DEAD' AFTER A WEEK
It's not the lash. It's the things you're doing that slowly murder it: layering fresh glue on old glue, pulling them off by the outer corner, and leaving them on a wet counter overnight. Each of these micro-traumas breaks down the band, crushes the fibers, and twists the shape.
Also, there's a quiet lash killer: mascara. Mascara on false lashes creates a layer of gunk that makes the fibers brittle. If you must wear mascara on fake lashes, only apply it to the tips.
7 HABITS THAT ADD WEEKS TO YOUR LASHES
- Remove them with your fingers, not your nails. Use your pointer finger and thumb, gently lifting from the waterline out. No yanking.
- Never soak them in micellar water. Instead, dip a Q-tip in makeup remover and wipe the band — never the fibers.
- Use tweezers to remove leftover glue. Pinch the band, not the hair. The hair is the fragile part.
- Store them back in the original tray. The tray upholds the curve.
- Don't flatten them under a makeup bag. This crushes the volume.
- Brush them after every wear. A spoolie keeps the direction consistent.
- Keep them away from steam. Bathroom steam can soften the band and reshape it permanently.
THE 1-MINUTE CLEANING ROUTINE I USE MYSELF
After every remove, I do this: squeeze a tiny drop of gentle facial cleanser on a cotton pad, then press the lash band (not the hair) onto the pad and pull through. That removes oil and leftover adhesive. Then I pat the band dry with a tissue and put it back in the tray. That's it. 60 seconds total.
If you want to be extra safe, let them air-dry face-up for 10 minutes before closing the tray. This keeps bacteria away and prevents that musky smell old lashes get.
WHEN TO RETIRE A PAIR (AND WHEN NOT TO)
You're done when the band starts to show kinks that stay after you bend them back, or when the hairs are visibly clumping. Usually that's after 15-25 wears for daily wear. If the band still snaps back and the fibers look tidy, they're still alive.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN LONG-LASTING LASHES
Not all lashes are built to survive your lifestyle. The band is everything — if it has no memory, it won't return to the natural curve. Look for a band that's thin but sturdy, with a slight flexibility. And avoid mascara-heavy styles that need constant re-fluffing. The right pair will save you money because it will actually stay around for a couple of months.
